just seen the curved spanner for the Haldex oil filter on ebay for £13,how good is that. Saves me fabricating one .

Thanks Gareth Decided first job is to get the cracked windscreen replaced ( booked for next week ) and then get the Haldex oil/filter changed. I feel I will then have a roadworthy car. The curved spanner needed to get the Haldex oil filter out will prove a challenge for me or my local indie. I can then work my way through the service items at my leisure .According to the service record it had a full service last October but only time will tell if it really was a 'full' service. Been getting to grips with the heating/AC this afternoon to stop the the windows misting up after a thunderstorm.What a complicated set up,did they make it complicated on purpose ?! I like nice simple set ups :one dial for cold/hot and one dial for the blower speed and an on/off switch for the AC.Yes I am old school or perhaps just 'old'. The more I drive the TT the more I realise how well built these cars were,just don't understand all the flack these mk1's got from the so called expert motoring press. Viva con dios or should that be 'viva con VW/Audi ' Jeff

Strange question to ask, but I got a strange answer at the dealer. Do these models have a sump dipstick for oil level and do they have a sump drain plug for when you change your oil? I asked the question about the drain plug, and the answer that came back was, ' If you vacuum it out, you know how much to put back'. No you get the engine hot, put the car on ramps on a slope, release the sump plug and with the rush of oil it scours any sludge or metals out. leaving a relatively clean sump. Using a suction pump, you leave sludge , metal and residue in there. As far as how much you refill it with, it should be in the handbook in the glove box and you refil to a litre short then move it onto level ground, add the remaining, checking the dipstick. Then run the engine and check for leaks, then check the following day before starting when cold. Check weekly or monthly along with other levels and tyre pressures. Do you have to fit an Audi oil filter and pay their mark up? Can you use Castrol EDGE 0W-20 LL IV or Shell equivalent ? Not some badged up marked up Audi oil, that they have made for them in some back street of Hamburg. What is the oil change /Service interval 12k as usual? Thank you in advance.

So I recently got the p261A code with an engine light aswell, I changed the b coolant pump and when I clear the codes the engine light comes back after 3 or so turn offs. Any solutions?

UPDATE so turns out the aftermarket actuator I put on it was either faulty or not set up properly, I changed it back to the original faulty one and got the original po299 code back and got a genuine actuator fitted and fixed the issue.

Thanks for your comments, Steve. The A3 is great and seems just as fast as my old 3.0 TDI A4 despite having only 148 bhp. It's automatic and S-Line, so sharper, flatter handling but still a pleasant ride (at least with the Comfort setting). Very quiet, relaxed and economical: it did 67 mpg on a 200 mile trip last week. Nice to have SatNav at last and also good to have my 2231 MP3 tracks on a tiny flash drive which sticks out only an inch from the USB-C socket. Not missing the Quattro so far but probably a different story when we get snow. ___________________________________________ Magnet, please keep the thread open until I advise sale or disposal of the car. Ed, Talking to a chap in our street with an M registered Stag and he said he lifted the Rad header tank higher to give the water pump a head of water. I will see if I can blag a picture of what he did. They were known for overheating and warped heads, perhaps for that reason. Some whipped the engine out and put the SD1 3.5 in it, without the Stag problems. Interesting to see how you get on. I assume its a retirement hobby? Brother has a 1934 Daimler 15, 2ltr straight 6 he is restoring, engine sounds lovely , especially when he opens the straight through flap on the exhaust. Starts first time as well. Spares are like hens teeth and cost a fortune if you find anything , but with a bit of African Ingenuity you can use something else. Found a wiper motor off something more modern and replaced original that fell apart when opened up, wire and comm segments everywhere. Its handy if you have a lathe, metal bending machine, sewing machine, and Mig, Tig and Stick welding machines and can use them all. Rewired, changed the trembler regulator to a solid state one that fits in the same box, if your interested I can find info on the one man band that does them, he had a 1930's Austin big 7 converted that way as well. He also found a place that stick& bakes on linings to brake shoes, that's up in Malton Yorkshire. His problem is trying to get it registered with DVLA, they keep asking for a Vin number, muppets! One headlight was for dipping by using a complicated solenoid to move the reflector down, the other headlight went dark, he's changing them to two lamps in the reflectors, luckily the reflectors are chromed brass not plastic like today, glass lens as well. Look forward to hearing your progress and problems.

The S-Line variants (in all models) tend to be a harder ride so allowing for sharper driving and cornering. Other variants including Sport are softer. The other main differences are in the looks, trim, wheels and seats, where the S-Line (in my opinion) look far better and upmarket. The seats are also much better and supportive. That said, all models come with driver modes where you can chose, Sport, Comfort etc settings so the differences in driving experiences may be minimal. I'd recommend checking option packs etc included in any used cars you view as these may prove more relevant to your needs. FYI - I bought a 2020 Q5 S-Line Competition last year and it's a brilliant smooth, quiet and comfortable drive with option to switch to Sport mode for more 'exciting' driving when needed. Hello, Managed to find aa used glove box with fridge for £80 including a CD multi changer. No wiring just take the old glove box out and find the cap from the Evaporator and remove the plug and fit the pipe. Then replace the glove box and connect the screw in pipe into the back of the glove box and hey presto I have a fridge and it works. You can regulate it as well. Just a slight problem in that my car is grey and the replacement glove box was black. However you cant see it when closed and I swapped the lid over so all good. Well worth it I think?
