BEV Posted April 29, 2018 Share Posted April 29, 2018 Good Afternoon. I am a new member to this forum. I was hoping someone might have an idea what this noise is in the attached video. I have owned the car for a year and it has always done it. It happens after 10 seconds after a cold startup when left to idle, it goes after a few mins. You can hear it better towards the end of the video when the mic is near the wheel arch. Millage is 55k. 2011, A3 S Line 2.0 TDI. Any advice would be much appriciated! Doesn't seem to play on my system but take Steve's opinion on difficulty of picking this up. Two points if it were mine:- If ( and only if) you are handy with the spanners then remove the auxiliary drive belt and check if the noise is still present. Find a recommended local diesel specialist (your local taxi drivers usually have good recommendations) and entrust a diagnosis to them. I think you are wise to be concerned about this since the car is trying to tell you something is wrong! I would treat its solution with some urgency. To pinpoint the noise you could try an old mechanic's trick with a screwdriver stethoscope. Place a large screwdriver tip firmly on various parts of the engine, then hold your ear against the handle. You'll be surprised just how noisy the bearings and pumps can be. I shan't insult your intelligence by warning you of the obvious dangers of this form of testing. Someone who also knows about cars had a listen in person and thinks its something to do with auxillery belt as well. Its booked in on Friday so will see. Magnet Posted May 5, 2018 Share Posted May 5, 2018 Hello Thomas, The idea of removing the auxiliary belt is to test whether the noise is from anything driven by this belt, so obviously if the noise doesn't go away when the belt is removed then you know the problem is with the engine/something driven by it - someone is going to let us know whether this is belt or chain driven - chain? '... Booked in on Friday ...... '... next week' ....... .?? Personally, ( and not having been able to hear this noise) I would have concerns about using this car. If it does indeed have a cam belt, it could , just could be this, and if that goes you can say ta ta to the engine and the car. BEV Posted May 26, 2018 Author Share Posted May 26, 2018 It's now sorted. When taken into the garage it first thought to be something on the aux belt. However the belt was removed and the noise was still there. So attention turned to the Cam belt. I asked them to replace it and the water pump as it was 2 years overdue anyway. cliffcoggin Posted May 26, 2018 Share Posted May 26, 2018 O well the cam belt was due for a change in a few thousand miles anyway, and it is normal to replace the pump at the same time. I know it was an expensive job, so console yourself with the thought that the consequences of belt failure would have cost you many times what you have just paid.
