Hi everyone ive got a 1990 Audi coupe 2.3e B3 and the cars in the garage at the moment getting a new steering rack fitted but ive bought the wrong one and now my cars in the garage in bits. Ive been trying for ages to get the right steering rack for my Audi but havent been able to see the part number when it was on the car. I phoned Audi up gave them my reg and they told me the part number is 896422065B so i tried to get one but couldnt get one anywhere. I then read that Audi stopped making this part in 2004 but replaced it with 896422065BX which fits the same so i ordered one and took it to the garage but it doesnt fit. The place for the power steering hoses is different. Ive looked at the original rack now its off the car and the part has various numbers on it but none of them seem to show any match. Does anyone know if Screenshot_20230208-194112_Gallery.thumb.jpg.8dd1955e26226bb4c7e37eac55869aff.jpgny of these numbers is the one i need or know where the correct one is located? Any help would be really appreciated. I feel bad as the cars in the garage on a ramp which is much needed. Thanks from Ian.

Hello Ian,

It looks like the correct part number is 894422066 and not …..065 as Audi said it was. Have you now enquired about availability of ….066?
You say the fitting positions of the hoses are different. If this is the only difference, can’t your garage get some modified hoses made up which will fit? Commercial vehicle motor factors are usually a good source of advice on who makes these pressure hoses.
Kind regards,

Gareth.

Gareth is spot on, either refurb it, or adapt it. Sorry I can’t be of more help but please do come back and tell us how your issue gets resolved.
good luck!

Hi just an update about my steering rack. The part is totally not available neither new or second hand so ive managed to find a company to refurb it. They estimate 4 working days so cross fingers everything goes smoothly. Thanks to everyone for all your help and advice. Really appreciated.Thanks.

Hi Ian, I'm also replacing the rack seals in my 90 Quattro 20v.  Just wondering how you went about taking the rack out? It looks pretty tight in the engine bay and I was wondering if you had any removal tips. Does the engine need to come out? Grateful for any advice you can offer.  Mine is Right hand drive, not sure if that makes a difference. Cheers, Glenn

Hi Glenn i didnt remove mine myself. Its at the garage but from what i know it is very tight to remove with the engine still in the car. I think that if you remove the nuts and bolts by the rubber boot on the rack and remove the 2 rods going to the rack from either front wheel once the rack is removed from the steering column where youl need to remove the fascia panel under the steering wheel above the pedals it can be pulled out through the drivers side wheel arch. Youl have to remove the wheel arch lining. Mine is a right hand drive too. I hope it goes smoothly for you. Good luck.

Hi just letting everyone know my steering rack is fixed and my Audi coupe is back on the road. I previously posted about the steering rack failing on my coupe and having difficulty finding a replacement. I got mine refurbished so its got the original part which was made in West Germany so i know its original. Really happy to get it sorted. Car drives absolutely perfect. Just relieved to finally get it back on the road.  Thanks to everyone who gave me advice. Heater matrix is the next big job to be done this summer hopefully. Im going to have a go myself after months of research and lots of youtube videos. Its always bothered me not having a good heater when i know how good the heaters on these cars can be. Thanks.

Well done Greg! The hardest part of the heater matrix is stripping out the dash but once in there it should be straight forward, good luck and keep us posted👌

Hello Ian,

Glad it’s all sorted, and pleased that the forum was able to point  you along the right road to get it fixed.
Anyone in a similar situation in the future will now know that refurbishment at a specialist is the way to go.
Many thanks and kind regards,

Gareth.
