Fault code 21583 - Loss of crankshaft synchronisation.

the cars a 3.0 tdi (218ps) S-Tronic.

Hi folks, anyone come across this before and know what causes it? It’s intermittent too.

there’s one other post I’ve seen with that code but no resolution. That guy had also just had the chain & tensioners replaced.

other code that comes out is P191A 00 (096). Have no idea what that means either!

cheers

Hi which of the four cam chains did you have replaced or all of them as if it was just the main chain only that would throw the camshaft timing out as the other chains are stretched to death as well, if it was all of the chains changed then someone got the timing slightly out.

I haven’t had any timing chains changed, that was someone else on here.

This code popped up in a remap pre-check. So I can’t proceed with the remap until this fixed.

car only has 62k miles on it.

Hi I quote, that guy had also[ just had the chain and tensioners replaced], anyone reading that statement would assume he had done the same as you have and has the same problem, the devil is is the detail, I would think one or more of the chains is slack which is whats throwing up your code with regard to milage cam chain wear is a law unto itself its very reliant on oil changes/oil quality, ask any mechanic about cam chain life and they will tell you how long is a piece of string, no one knows exactly as there are to many contributing factors.

P.S the last code you published on the first post is the Pcode for the same thing, cam timing out.

Syntax, it’s meant to say that the guy that reported the same fault had previously, for an unrelated issue,  as well as the fault appearing had previously had the chain replaced.
reflecting what he’d done, not something I’ve done or that he did as a consequence of the fault code.

Hi either way you have a timing chain problem and no amount of who said what under debate will actually cure what you have which is a cam timing anomaly which is caused by premature or otherwise chain wear, with regard to your specimen symbiotic case its a moot point as no one knows if the garage who did the chains also made the camshaft finite adjustments to the vernier gears on the camshaft sprockets.

If its any consolation I had the same "Intermittent" (or as the diagnostics called it: "Sporadic"):

21583 P191A00 Loss of Crankshaft Synchronization (01101000 Passive/Sporadic) and I had a slight clicking/tapping sound that could only be heard at very low speeds, and but sped up and slowed down with the revs.

This resulted in me have the engine removed and diagnostics carried out, which found a faulty tensioner, a broken guide and a stretched chain. Mechanic said I had some ear on me to pick up the sound as it was extremely hard to hear, and I caught everything in great time. Needless to say she got the works (All new chains, new tensioners, new guides, new gears, oil seals, turbo gaskets, exhaust gaskets, exhaust valve inlet, head was skimmed with new valves, head gaskets, head bolts, injectors tested, injectors seals and O rings, injector bolts, rocker cover seals, hydraulic lifters, valve stem oil seals), along with a new coolant set up in the V to resolve the common leak.

Would most certainly have it checked by an Audi Indep. Specialist.

I only get a minor rattle under harder acceleration, normal urban acceleration is ok, just when you give it a little bit more when joining faster traffic on the M’way etc, It only lasts for a split second, almost not noticeable.

It’s fine on start up & starts with no issues.

I’ve spoken to a local Audi specialist, they think it’s either; the chain, the tensioner, 1 or more of the plastic guides or all of the above.

it’s going in for them to check/confirm next week,  If it needs those changing, apparently it’s a 2 day, £3k job! Which is more than a bit scary. To say the least.

Yeah say it will need chain and tensioner going from my experience.

Mines cost considerably more than £3K 🙈

Hope you get sorted - at least peace of mind

Yeah, can imagine, they did say that there are a lot of single use components in just doing the chains, tensioner and guides, apart from all the seals & gaskets, things like stretch bolts etc.

apparently the parts would be over £1k to start with.

but when it does get, I’ll also get the common water leak bits done too, that just makes sense as it’ll be accessible at the same time, so 2 birds. One stone.

still very annoying though, just wasn’t expecting these sort of problems at 62k miles, partly why I bought the car! Hey ho!

I was in the same boat, and I have slightly less miles than that. Someone said the tensioners are the weak points. But once done you know your good for another 60k at least sure. Well that’s the way I try to positively look at it lol

Def the right idea on the coolant leak part, get all done together

  • 4 weeks later...

I had it it checked by a non-franchised specialist. It’s fine.

he said if/when I can hear a rattle on every start (there’s none at present), then spend some money.

apprently the tensioner is very sensitive to oil level. Mine was half way up the (software monitor) indicator between max & min. Topped up and no sign or sound of any rattle under any condition. (Start, hard acceleration etc).

quote was for £2,300, which seems fairly good value as the online ‘garage job guide’ software said £2,700 for labour alone!

so no further action apart from back to standard weekly oil checks.
