WonkyDonkey1971
Hey folks. Have had the car about 18 months, 110,000 miles. Have had intermittent no crank for last few months. Sometimes starts 1st time other times it's 10+ cycling of the key. No codes. I note that when it's not going to crank the radio and lights aren't interrupted. Is it likely to be ignition switch or should I be looking somewhere else in the electrical system (or somewhere else altogether). Any thoughts would be welcome as I don't fancy writing a blank cheque to someone to trace an intermittent fault if I can help it!
Steve Q
Do you get any tickets when turning the key, ie starter motor trying to start it? Could it be crank position sensors? Cam sensors? Or an imobiliser issue?
WonkyDonkey1971
Hi Steve. There does seem to be something going on when you hit the key. I wondered if the starter was spinning but not engaging with the flywheel but it's impossible to actually see anything as I'm sure you know. The fact that the lights and stereo were staying on when it didn't crank but would be interrupted when it did turn over made be me think something electrical. Not sure how to see what the immobilizer is doing, I've only got a basic OBD2 reader and I'm not sure it give that level of info, and with cam position sensors. The fact there were no codes I assumed that wasn't a problem but if that's not the case ...
cliffcoggin
The ECU could be inhibiting the starting as Steve suggested and you would need to get the car scanned by a decent code reader to find the fault. On the other hand there may be a more straightforward electrical fault which you can test yourself if you have a suitable multi-meter. Check: the output from the ignition switch, the operation of the starter relay, the soundness of the starter cable connections at both ends, the earth cable/strap of the starter, and the soundness of the battery connections. WonkyDonkey1971
Appreciate your thoughts, will try to do some of those basic checks when time allows. Either that or it'll Lane me stranded and I'm have to choice but to get a professional to look at it.
