Problems after EA189 engine emissions update

Many thanks for your reply!

Id say i have done about 400 miles since the update, as 2 weeks i was on holiday and I take it in turns with a colleague to drive.

I just really don't want to be messed around with this, as I can see no reason as to why this would be my fault!

Thanks for your wishes of good luck!

Right.  Audi have contacted me to tell me that my steering rack problem has nothing to do with the emissions update.  I know that it is, I have been told by a friends relative, who works for TWS that they know about this and it is far from the only time this has happened.  A 4 year old A6 needs a new steering rack?  Really?

My question is this:  How are Audi getting away with this?  They have wrecked my vehicle with an update, further they know and I know it, yet they are denying it.   A prestige car manufacturer treating their customers this way is scandalous, why is nothing being done to bring them to heel?

Hi,

Just joined. Very similar issues to most of the posts on here. I had the update / fix applied 6 months ago. I did notice that the regen was kicking in more often but told it was normal by the dealer.

Took the car for a 60k mile service and the engine warning light appeared 3 days later, I have asked Audi UK to comment via the Trust Building forms but they haven't responded. I did ask for the name of any independent specialist that would be able to inspect any parts that are subsequently removed to ascertain if the failure could be attributed to the update, possibly be  the reason in the delay in responding. The dealer seemed to be physic and told me that a repair was going to be expensive even before ant diagnostics have been carried out!

It would be interesting to see any data that Audi UK hold to see if they have a trend in EGR / DPF faults on those vehicles that have had the EA189 but unlikely share i suppose.

I decided to take mine to an independent Audi specialist, half the price for the diagnostic and if I decide to go ahead, £600 to replace, he was keen to advise that Audi do insist on the work been carried out by an approved dealer to pursue and claim under the trust building thing and left the choice with me.

Hi, I can’t recommend the steps that I took but this is the outcome of my problems,

The garage (not a dealer but a Bosch service centre) were happy to clear the fault every Saturday for 3 weeks until finally the only fault left was the Throttle body sticking, each week I did my normal 20 miles a day plus the 40 mile round trip to the garage.

I drove it relatively hard (again, not recommended) until the regen kicked in on a regular basis. I Only put branded ultra diesel in every time.

Since changing the throttle body 2 months ago the car runs fine and have had no more ERG/DPF faults, probably tempting fate now!

Audi just wanted to change the parts and quoted £1200.

Hi all,

newbie here so please be gentle

Figure i need to share this ....... jump on this forum ....... even if to only get it of my chest and vent a little frustration sumwhere

Heres my story so far................ My Local (ish) Audi dealership is TEESIDE AUDI (not the nearest but better for me work wise (dropped it in on way to work))

My wifes Audi A1 1.6TDI (E189) Sport in Misano Red - 2011 - cars done 39k - owned from new & had several options added on ordering (xenons, LED interior lights, sat nav, upgraded alloys, 5yr service pack ect ect ect) - ALWAYS SERVICED & MOT'ed (after 3 years) BY MAIN DEALER

When the scandal broke...... we had the usual Audi letters saying a 'Fix' was in the pipeline & would be notified when this was ready !

Fast forward well over a year............. (several letters....... approval needed ect ect ect) and finally ........ 'Sorted' ........ a 'Fix' (update) was approved and all we now needed to do was book the car in with our local dealer :thumbup1:  Seems the E189 '1.6 TDI' was the very last in the line of being sorted ! for what ever reason ???

Bit of 'pre update history' ........

Car was a year old when it had a new EGR fitted under warranty ....... not that this is relavant i guess ?

Anyway....... during the awaited update approval .... the car had been to Audi a couple of times for service & MOT

Whilst there i chatted to a service technician in the garage (long story but car failed an MOT on the private plate letter spacing as was rushing on the morning & forgot to stick the 'correct spacing' plates on prior to taking !! Doh :shifty:) ...... i digress........  i quized him about the proposed update ?? he told me a fix was awaiting approval & at present it seemed like it was a easy fix re-designed airbox addition along with a software update ! Job sorted

Fast forward several month later.. (maybe a year even ??) .. (must have been a service ??) - spoke again with service team & another technician to this time be told ' wow.... the E189 (1.6TDI only) fix was still awaiting approval but it looked like it was now going to be a MAJOR 3 DAY JOB at least !! head off..... injectors ... ect ect ect' !! BIG expensive job but of course funded by Audi themselves as it was a recall/emissions scandal fix !!

Fast forward again to the arrival of the Audi letter saying 'fix approved please book your car in with your local dealer - it shouldnt take no longer than a hour to fix' ???

Hmmmmmmmm ???? i thought ???? Obviousley not the '3 day BIG JOB' that was mentioned previously ??

Car booked in & update done  in August 2017 !! HUGE MISTAKE !!!!!!!!!

Picked it up & INSTANTLY noticed a difference ...... i thought it was driving like a 1940's double decker bus but as its my wifes car & i dont drive it that often i figured id let the boss (wifey) decide on that one !!

3 days later ...... wifes report ...... same as many on here really ....... No power... judder...... stalling ........ fan running on after switch off...... burning smell & lower MPG's !!

basically driving like a bag of '_______' (choose ur own word) ........ I think if ANYBODY would know how the cars driving it would be my Wifey as had it from brand new !!

Got intouch with dealership..... booked in for diagnostic but told a £60 charge would be payable if nothing related to update was found !

Wife used my car & i needed a courtesy car...... £15 charge i was told ..... WHAT ?? you wreck my wifes car & u want me to pay £15 ?? Its not the amount ... its the principle .... anyway.... after speaking to service manager they gave me a courtesy car GRATIS :smile1:

Car in dealership ALL DAY & recieved a txt approx 1630hrs to say 'Your cars ready to collect' ...... no fone call ...... or ........ we found this & that wrong ect ect .... just a please collect your car txt !!

Get to dealership (Teeside Audi) to be told .... waffle waffle waffle .... yes sir no sir three bags full sir .... diagnostics & road test done .... found NOTHING WRONG & £60 please :taz:

Told them the car drives like a 40's double decker bus since update... (we should know..... well my wife should) & the DPF light had been on 'Weekly' since update (usally twice a year (after 2 years ownership) & a quick blast down the motorway got rid for another 6 months) ....... quick note: Durham to Edinburgh (day 1) (me driving.... bit quicker than wifey) Edinburgh to Durham (day 2) ........ Day 3 .... get in car on drive .... switch on ...... BINGO .... DPF light AGAIN !! Explain that Mr.Audi ???

After 20min chat with service manager & the usual 'cant find anything wrong' waffle ..... they decided to 'As a good will gesture'  waive the £60 fee (id already refused to pay it anyway..... again .... not the amount but the principle) ...... they told me to bring it straight back as soon as ANY warning light came on !! I did ask them to check the warning light (DPF) history (as they had previously said data is stored in the vehicle memory prior to it going in for diagnostics) since update to confirm the 'every week on' since update ..... when i collected the car they said no such information was stored as only critical information is stored ???? DPF £1700 repair bill sounds pretty 'Critical' to me !!

Took the car home ...... still drives like a bus ....... wifey not impressed & as a new car is due she now refuses to have anything related to VAG !! Even an advised (from me) PETROL !!

so...... where we at ....... it seems many people are having very similar issues & not getting anywhere !!

Firstly id like to say ...... I DONT BLAME THE DEALERSHIP !! TEESIDE AUDI have been brilliant !! Its NOT the dealerships fault as they are just the guys who implement the 'Fix' for our cars !! They are the guys that sold us the 'Best thing since sliced bread' vehicle based on what they were led to believe from the manufacturers !!

It seems strange to me that an initial 'Air box & software update modification' ........ possible 'HUGE EXPENSIVE (at VAGs expense) 3 day job top end engine re build/modification' ....... to ......... fast forward over a year eventual '20 min plug-in software update solution' was found & approved as a fix ??? Were talking about a multi BILLION ££££££ company here !!! How is it the technical boffins that created the 'Cheat system' in the first place took so long on finding a simple 20 min plug-in update to sort it out ?? And another question ....... WHY was it the E189 1.6TDI seemed to be last on the list over the 2L E189 ??? please Mr.Audi ..... shed some light on that ????

My take on it is ...... all dealerships have been told (by the Billion ££££ company) that ANY problems arising AFTER an update would ALWAYS be coincidental regardless of our 'nothing wrong with the car in the YEARS before the update issue !! No ifs no buts !! END OF !!

I read about 1 particular dealership offering to pay IN FULL the £3K+ repair bill on one condition .......... they could take the car to an authorised Audi independant (do they exist ??) who COULD PROVE the update was the cause of the multiple part failures !! REALLY !!!!! They already know this would be IMPOSSIBLE to do !! Hence the offer !!

Several people here with post update issues are fighting with dealerships !! They are prestige franchises who operate strictly under the guidance of their bosses...... Its a livelyhood for the owners of such franchises....... They are basically doing & saying what they are told for fear of it being taken away from them !! Their bosses..... MR AUDI DIRECT !!

Our fight is with them ...... not the dealership !! American VAG customers didnt have to do a thing ........ Their goverment did it all for them !! Wheres our goverment help/intervention ?? What also seems strange to me ..... and i have to make a point in saying (for fear of retribution)...... that this is MY OPINION ONLY (which i am with-in my rights to have) that how come ........ the initial update (piece of plastic thingy along with software update) was NOT APPROVED ??? Top end re build .... NOT APPROVED ??? to eventual ....... 20 min software only update approved & implemented ???? Answers on a postcard please :yahoo:

Rant over ........ do i feel better Hmmmmmmmmm ........ NOPE !!

Currently trying to convince my wife to get a new PETROL Audi ........ shes not having it just yet !! Car 'WAS' booked in for its MOT and a service ...... cancelled it this morning & told Audi why ...... also told them to give me a TOP price (considering our circumstances & the fact that weve had 4 brand new Audis over 15 years) for a trade in.

I hold my breath

Will update you all :Jumpy:

Welcome to the forum Wayne, you'll find the members on here are a friendly and helpful bunch :)

Sorry to hear you have fallen victim of the update. Please keep us updated on how you get on. I believe that watchdog had been investing vag over car issues which VAG claim are not connected.

Also the reason why our government hasn't got involved is because despite the cheat device being fitted the diesel vag cars still.meet the emission requirements in Europe. The US are more strict on emissions and hence why US owners are getting more compensation etc. VAG have only done the recall in europe as good will for there dishonesty.

Cheers

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the welcome buddy :yahoo:

Yes...... seems about right ....... us Brits 2nd class as usual ...... and far too soft !!

Id be much happier if Audi just told us all the truth !! It seems a pretty identical choice of words are used when problems post update are reported !

"its NOTHING to do with the update" ........... "It REALLY IS coincidental" ......... "We'll run a diagnostic & get back to you" .......... & my personal favourite ..... "As a GOOD WILL gesture we'll reduce the needed coincidental repair costs" !!!!

Im not hunting compensation ...... couldnt care less....... just want some truthful answers ........ I know there are more people that report no issues post update & great !! Happy Audi customers ....... but it seems to me that Audi have taken a gamble on the law of percentages ........ probably less than a 100th of 1 percent reported problems & subsequent loss of future customers which im sure VAG would of taken hands down after the revelation !!

Anyway ....... had a good chat with their service department today when their service manager called me to ask why id cancelled my MOT & Service booking !!

Told them the truth !! Will update when i know the outcome of what ive asked for  Not holding my breath !!

You're welcome :)

You'd be surprised on how many people have reported issues after the recall. But not all customers have egr or dpf failures some are just reporting lower mpg etc. I did have some figures from a news article that I posted on here. I'll have to look to see where I posted it.

Either way I can't see the issue just going away. But you are right in saying that the individual dealer is not at fault as they are just having to clean up Audis dirty work with what Audi provides for them.

Welcome Wayne T , sadly this situation is happening across the UK and no doubt elsewhere in Europe. It also appears to be a lottery with some Audi's being successfully updated and others like yourself not so , it maybe worth mentioning that the 1.6 tdi seems more prone than the 2.0 tdi to problems judging by the feedback in the club. And like yourself in also had the wool pulled over my eyes too thinking it was the right action for the great of good ! .A remap to stage 1 seems the answer to correct this debacle being the general thoughts of most. Good luck with your quest and keep us posted buddy.

Hello Steve,

I can only echo Steve's views and commiserations, and of course it is now evident that you have joined an increasing band of owners who are not only dissatisfied with their cars, but also the way VAG are treating them. It seems the final outcomes of the majority of complainants on here are unfortunately unknown, so I guess the forum members cannot offer you any more advice than has already been given.

For me, as a simply interested- party in things Audi, I find it frustrating that this important topic on the forum does not seem to reach the owners that matter ( like yourself - the ones awaiting recall) before it's too late, and the deed is done. No criticism meant, but as I recall, you may be the only one we know of who had been actively chasing this update, rather than avoiding it, or giving it second thoughts. That in itself is proof positive that the although (adverse) publicity surrounding these recalls is getting through to some, it obviously isn't getting through to all.

Not wishing to appear patronising, I must admire your brand loyalty, and your intention of returning to Audi. Many in your position (most -once bitten?) probably wouldn't give them the time of day, leave alone their money!

If it were me Wayne, I think I would be investigating Fast Edd's positive advice and hopefully stick with the car you have known and loved, rather than parting with extra wedges of notes into VAG's pockets.

It may be interesting to note that our local taxi owners are moving away from their long term affairs with their trusty Skoda s. If you want to know about makes and models to buy - or not buy-  just look or enquire at the taxi ranks.

Anyway Wayne, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

Hi all

Just joined today after researching problems after emission recall. Recall done a couple of days ago and warning lights came on the other day. I got recovered in back to the dealer as the car wasn’t driveable and vibrations through the steering.

I complained that this only had the recall done two days ago and they said my faults weren’t related to the software update. I’ve complained to Audi Uk and they say the decision is with the dealer as “they are at the sharp end”. So now I’m stuck with no car and a repair bill for £95 for a new tyre and they will reset the tyre warning for free though

Unhappy as i think they punctured the tyre whilst it was one site with them  I wish I hadn’t had the emissions done now!!

Hello Len,

Welcome to the forum, and sorry to hear that you have come across this forum due to dissatisfaction after the recall, rather than via. some research prior to agreeing to get it done.

I'm not sure what this forum, and I guess other VAG forums,  aren't doing that they could do, to bring to attention the potential pitfalls of subjecting these cars to this recall before it is done. Personally, I cannot see there is much more that they can do, but it's worrying that the bad news is not getting through to where it matters - until it's too late.

No doubt you have read all the depressing earlier posts, and unfortunately being realistic, there doesn't appear to be much good news from members who post on here regarding the outcome of their dealings with VAG or the dealers. In effect, there isn't any co-ordinated evidence which points the likes of folks such as yourself down a road to satisfaction. In other words, feedback is very very limited, so unless others on here have more updated knowledge then I'm not sure what this forum can offer - other than commiserations.

It has been suggested that the situation can be put to rights? by having the car remapped (at your expense) and perhaps others on here may be able to advise from experience of being in your situation and having the performance reinstated back to where it was.

Perhaps you could keep us up to date Len, on how you get on with the dealer and VAG, since it's only by your experiences from here in, can genuine help be offered in the future.

Kind regards,

Gareth.c

Hi all. Nearly a year ago, i received an emissions letter from Audi, saying my 2011 Q5 needed a free test or something. I can't quite remmeber, but they collected it, sent me a video via email of them working on the car etc, and I think they topped it up with Adblue.

Anyway within a month the engine management light came on, but I didn't have any performance issues like most have experienced. Got one of those readers off eBay, it threw a code up and it related to the nox sensors or something. I read a forum and someone said the adblue needing filling up. So i bought a huge carton of it. It nearly took the lot. 50 miles later, the light goes out.

Then it returns. I fill it with more adblue. Not as much. I knocked the light off using the reader I bought.

It has returned twice since. Since november 2016, I have done about 4000 miles in the car, I hardly use it, which is why it has taken me ages to finally google it after the latest light rears it head again. And it got me thinking, this light has only started since Audi took it in for the emissions test they did. Since they looked at the car, I've probably done about 3000 miles in it in 11 months.

The only thing I've noticed since I had it back, is that it sometimes takes an age for the fans to stop when the car has been turned off. Sometimes after five minutes, I've gone back outside to double check I've not actually left it running.

Do you think I'm wasting my time going back to Audi to see if it's something to do with this update? Or shall I just keep knocking the light off and get it remapped?

Any advice is welcome!
Thanks in advance

Hello Nuala,

I'm sorry to hear that your issues are adding to the bad experiences of others. How many bad experiences against good ? Only VAG would know I guess.

Not that it will be any consolation to you, but the thought of having to take a car of mine in for a so called update, would lead to many sleepless nights. Thanks, but no thanks for a free update!

Now I'm not sure how this will be received by the administrators of this forum - but it's only a personal opinion of what I would be tempted to do if it were mine - I would formally write the to the dealer principal by recorded delivery letter and register my  dissatisfaction as a result of this upgrade and inform him that I intend to present the facts of my discontents to the media, since I understand that mine is not an isolated bad experience following these updates. Tell them that I  propose to do that within say seven days receipt of the letter unless I  have the car returned to me  ( with no expense to me) in the same performance mode as it was before I was asked to return it for this upgrade.

Still not happy after this? Then it would be the national press for me.

I must emphasise that this is what I would do if it were mine, and not necessarily a recommendation for what others should do, but I could be something to think about.

I can only wish you well in your quest to right the wrongs.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

In order to get the remap you'll have to get the update rolled back first, which is about £100, look on the Facebook group 'The Volkswagen Diesel Customer Forum' for advice and the group 'EA189 Emission Fix Reversal Assistance Forum' will be able to recommend a tuner in your local area, most of which offer a discount if you quote the group!

Definitely call the emissions line and get them to set up a case for you

Hi , as with a large proportion of Audi customers including myself who have had this less that adequate EA189 NOX update carried out the problems can vary , but one seems to appear quite regularly and that is the cooling fan/fans running after the engine has stopped. Normally if your vehicle has or is in the middle of a DPF regeneration the fans run on for roughly 5 mins after engine stops to cool the engine bay as things get rather toastie . EGR problems seem to occur also , loss of power , engine sounds less refined. You won't get all that far with Audi as a few will lay testament to.  A remap would probably put your Audi back to original ish state. Sorry to respond with this long essay. Kind regards Edd.

Just thought I'd give thanks for the replies to my issue(s). If you haven't joined the facebook page, I'd highly recommend it. Without the advice from here and FB, I wouldn't have even thought about putting two and two together, ringing Audi and getting my car booked in, for a diagnostic check, free of charge, with a courtesy car.
Swines aren't they for trying to keep these issues quiet.

Glad you've got some sort of a result Wes, please keep us posted on how you get on :)

I do admit the whole situation has been handled poorly.

  • 7 months later...

I had my emissions recall update done around 1 year ago, before this my car ran like a dream no issues what so ever.

Since the update I have had 5 EGR pipe faults, I had these repaired at my local garage due to the distance of my nearest Audi garage.

I paid for the the inlet Andy outlet pipes when they broke respectively, after this the parts and labour were covered by Audi under the manufactures parts warranty, my car was back in the garage last month for again the 5th time and shock EGR pipe has cracked.

Afetr the repair the mechanic said Audi refuse to pay for the parts and Labour anymore and I have to take it to them for a full diagnostics Andy parts Andy Labour costs I will have to infuse £££££££££,

Im no mechanic but I’m 100% sure this is all down to the emissions software update but I know there’s is no way Audi will admit liability for it.

legally what are our rights to have this issue sorted as by reading the comments I’m not the only one suffering with this issue.

I love my Audi and the brand but I feel massively let down due to this.

Hello Daniel,

I'm very sorry to hear of your on-going issues, particularly since when you presented your car for recall a year ago, there were already some 4 pages of problematic posts on this forum (how many on other VAG forums?) which could have pointed you towards not agreeing to the recall. Water under the bridge as we say, and we cannot go backwards.

Where do you go from here? Depends on how much money you are prepared to spend to contest your issues, and of course your chances of a successful outcome. If it were mine, I think I would give this a good couple of coats of thinking about, but I would fear a pessimistic outcome.

On a more positive note - cracking pipes? Pardon my ignorance but are these rubber pipes?

If so, why are they cracking? Substandard quality? Some external cause causing them to crack?

Even if substandard, do you want to continue to experience similar issues with replacements , and/or argue with VAG?

More substantial equivalents available? We now hear of silicone pipes - would ones of this material be available or modifiable?

This would be where my thoughts and efforts would be concentrated in the short term - unless someone else comes up with a better alternative.

Good luck with some sort of improvement.

Kind regards,

Gareth.
