  1. Here is the definition of Tiptronic.

"Tiptronic is the name given to Audi's manual shifting mode available on their regular automatic gearboxes."

The Multitronic, DSG and modern Torque converter gearboxes all have this manual shifting function.

So the build sheet of my departed 2011 A5 DSG shows code OG7 (Tiptronic) AND G1D (7-speed automatic transmission for four wheel drive vehicle).

  2. Do you know what engine is in your car at the moment?  Quattro?

How long do you think such an engine swap would take and would you want the car off the road for that length of time?

If you have the time and money anything is possible - and the engines will be 20 years old by now.

  3. Here is a link to the Audi option codes. My car has option 7E6.

If you are not the original owner of the car, how do you know what tinkering might have been done with VCDS by the previous owners? Although I am not a user, I'm sure it is possible to bring up options in the MMI which have no effect because the item is not fitted.

I cannot find a remote auxiliary heater option to pre-heat the cabin before the engine is started in a UK brochure, though it does appear in an American brochure. There I can also see a picture of a special key with a LCD display.

Looking on eBay there are auxiliary heater elements for sale. I guess these kick in once the engine has been started to provide a initial boost  as diesel engines are slow to warm up.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello Andrew,

TThe only thing that I’m not clear on is what you have done (with the clutch hydraulics) to rectify the primary loss of clutch pressure. I saw LUK and clutch, but on re-reading this, it seems the switch was by LUK rather than any clutch parts replacement.
    Kind regards,

    Gareth.

The switch was attached to a new master cylinder .....?????

  5. If you can afford to pay the premium for that sort of urban usage then go for it.

I use premium diesel in my Audi TDi because of the dire warnings I received if I did not use it.

I looked at the fuel consumption my my diesel today.

Urban running in 30 mph limits to pick up my mother - average 20 mpg.

Add a bit of steady 40 mph running on the North Circular - increases to an average of 30 mpg.

Add a run up the A40, M25 and M4 - increases to an average of 42 mpg.

  6. At 70mph you are probably only using 45 BHP of the 190 at your disposal.  Aerodynamic drag is the major enemy at highway speeds and the the A6 is a large, heavy car and still needs a bit of gas to maintain speed up the inclines.

If you had a petrol A6, then the mpg would be more like 33.

Do make sure that top gear (7th?) is being used. I sometimes need to force the car into top at 70 mph - but I do have an 8-speed gearbox.

Was able to secure set of 4 steel wheels, exact size and everything I want. I want my car on black steel wheels for winter I always did that way.

Thanks for all your help guys and will let you know once fitted.

    Regards

For anyone following this, there is an eBay seller offering an apparently unmarked set of 17" alloys with 4 winter tyres, 2 good + 2 poor for £400.

My car has come off its 20's and onto 17's for ride comfort.

I have bought from these guys before.

Hi it started around 18 months ago, I thought it was just a signal problem then I tried my phone in my wife’s new q 3 and it worked ok, if I get a call in my car on the hands free Bluetooth it is intermittent but if I get out the car while the person is still on the phone it works perfect !!!,

Have you had the windscreen replaced at any time?

Big wheels, or "Stupid-Wheels" is one of my pet hates.

Marketing led and misunderstood by many consumers.

Depending on the make/model it can spoil things in at least two ways when it comes to choice.

    1) New cars. Makes you avoid a better value higher spec'd variant because you are forced with that to take big wheels and low profile tyres. You can often get round it by taking a lower trim variant and piling on the options, but that is an expensive way to approximate to the higher spec variant, purely to avoid the Stupid-Wheels. I do wish manufacturers ( or often as it is, a country's importing company ) would just let the consumer decide if they want those sort of wheels and not think they know best for us, forcing it to automatically come with the higher general spec.

    2) The available range of used cars. Again the higher spec variants suffering from Stupid-Wheels but also, the tendency for people to "upgrade" their wheels anyway on lower variants, often not realising the implication for noise and ride. Its so frustrating in browsing lists of available models, to find so few with sensible wheels. And you often end up missing out on a well spec'd car because of your wish to avoid Stupid-Wheels.

I agree with most of the above. What you forget to say is the the Stupid Wheels come also with Stupid firm and lowered Suspension.

Yes, my second-hand A6 Avant SE came with 20" alloys which thumped loudly over poor surfaces. I couldn't wait to get a nice set of 17" wheels and 55 section tyres on it. The big wheels I will keep because they will add hugely to the desirability/resale value at trade-in time.

My mind is boggled by the number of people who use their cars as an art form. I admit that some of the lowered cars look amazing, but I do wonder how practical they are.

The Germans have got it right. They buy a base car and everything is an extra.

It doesn’t have CarPlay. So we don’t have usb connectors but we do have the AMI plug under the centre arm rest. Are these worth using? It plays media from the phone via Bluetooth anyway.

The AMI will charge the phone and you can control the phone from the steering wheel buttons.

Thanks Guys. Appreciate your thoughts. Hard to believe how many 2 litre A6 Avants are out they compared to the 3 litre!

That is because the 2.0 litre is perfectly adequate for most people for most driving.

If a 3 litre will do 40 mpg, I would expect the 2.0 litre to do 50+.

0-60 in 8.2 seconds for the 190PS Ultra is not slow but it does very much depend on where you're coming from.

You will always enjoy the fuel economy of the 2-litre, so think carefully how often you will use the extra performance of the 3-litre.

  12. See if the garage can find any technical services bulletins and also get them to call Audi Germany to see if this a new problem.

There are two types of 8-speed Tiptronic gearbox.

The first type is the Multitronic found on many 2.0 litre cars and a few 3 litres.

The second type only comes with an engine called a BiTDi.

    Which one have you got?
