I had a heater flap motor fail on my2018 A5.

A genuine OEM motor also cost me around £165.

A specialist Audi mechanic (4Rings in Dartford) replaced it. It was the driver's side that failed, which is more difficult to replace as there's little room to navigate (the bottom of the driver's side dash had to be removed, and there is another flap motor that had to be removed that was in the way).

Officially going by the book, the whole dash should be removed (depending on what flap needs replacing), but few youtube video's show that you can get away with removing just the bottom half of the dash. I advised the mechanic and he managed to do it that way saving about 4-6 hours labour!!!!

It took a couple of hours labour and they had to perform a 'basic setting' to pair up the part to the system. So you need a OBDII scanner with the basic setting function if you were to do a DIY job.

Personally, unless you have the tools, seen step by step how it's done, and it's on the passenger side, I would leave it to someone more experienced.

In total, it cost me around £460 (parts, labour + VAT).

    Thank you very much kh904.

I did manage to get the offending flap motor out in the end.

Luckily It was on the passenger side. By removing the glove box, heater motor and various other parts, we found the flap motor and unbolted it, it was mounted on the side of the air distribution unit.

The motor was working perfectly  but the bracket it was mounted on was broken. A spigot which mounts a sprocket gear had snapped off. The gear engages with an air box flap for the passenger side.

I found it difficult to source a new part so tried repaired it using Araldite and a V shaped steel plate on the reverse side.

We put everything back together under the dashboard and tested it, it worked fine...and no more clicking. 😊

Had similar in my previous A4 but left it because it didn't make any difference to the AC

In your case, it depends which motor has failed. I think there are five, and have varying levels of complexity.

I'd also reconsider your "specialist" and look elsewhere based on that assessment.

  3. Hiya. I've got a problem with 'clicking' under the dashboard of my S5, 2007.

I took it to a local Audi specialist where they and came back with a failed heater flap valve/ motor.

They couldn't give me a price on replacement as they haven't done one before. Quoted anything from 3 to 10 hours.

    The part alone is £165.

I'm thinking of having a go myself so if anyone has had the same problem and managed to fix it, I would appreciate any advice.

    Many thanks.

    Paul.
