Hi plug removal is fairly straight forward, if you get the engine nice and hot and use a low nm torque wrench set at 28nm to crack them off, reassembly should include a liberal coat of aluminium anti seize paste, the duty cycles are all different according to your post and yes the plugs wear as a set but at different failure rates.

    Steve.

Hey, drained the oil and took the pan off, oil was a browny colour and has tiny metal flakes in. Do you think its worth putting fresh fluid in or would the metal flakes suggest something has failed?

  2. Hi,

Quivk update. So finally got car mot'd and on the road. Its a 3.0 TDi quattro s-line automatic. When I bought it, it had an issue where it would drive fine, then all of a sudden feel like it was in neutral then would shift past 3rd. Because it had no mot decided to get that done first. Picked it up earlier, took it for a drive, did as it was before drove fine for a bit, reved with no movement then stuck at not being able to get past 3rd.

But....turned into my road and all of a sudden there was a massive clunk and now there is no drive at all. Any ideas where to start? Is it a gearbox off to see job?

    TIA

Hi yes it may well be the valve block in the gearbox but it sound like the wet clutch is slipping thats why it won't change up as the torque grip sensor is not getting the right information to change up, the glow plugs are definitely shot up the duty cycles are all over the place.

    Steve.

ah ok, so you think its the plugs rather than a fuse/relay? is it normal for all 6 to be bad? although tbh I have no idea if/when they were changed. On these engines are the prone to snapping in the head? I know some VW's I have owned this has been an issue

Hoping the glow plugs is a fuse/relay?

That's positive 🙂 the slipping clutch sensation is probably the cause of the issue.

Will have to wait until I get it MOT ready then will see if the fault comes back. There are a few other issues that need sorting too now I have done a VCDS scan lol

I think you might find it'll have to be coded to the car. Do t quote me on this though.

Sooo.....I cleared the codes (after fitting a new battery the codes didn't come straight back) and took it for a drive around my car park (no MOT so can't go on the roads 😞), only managed to get to 3rd gear due to the short distances, but codes have not come back yet (not sure if it needs to try to get into 4th, 5th, 6th before it realises there is a fault). It did however feel the same as though the clutch was slipping in a manual when it changed gear, not sure if that is normal or not. Put it in S mode and it launches really well, surprised how much it pulls from standing.

ok no worries, at least it sounds fixable 🙂 is there anything you know of I can do with VCDS to log/change to narrow down the possible cause or is this a specialist workshop job?

That's a good thing! I'd definitely say the module. The serial number seems to be present on that diagnostic check you've done.

how do I go about getting a replacement module (is this the box thats inside the panel under the car?)? I did a quick search for 09L 927 156 and several second hand ones pop up, does the software version etc have to all match up too?

  9. 1 minute ago, Steve Q said:

The CVT gearbox is known as a weak gearbox. Has the car been used for towing? If so that won't have helped it's condition. I think the modules are known to be more unreliable on the CVT.

No, luckily the tow bar was one of the only optional extras the owner didn't go with when they got the car, so never towed 🙂

I think a module change will be a few hundred quid. Obviously worse case scenario is a knackard gearbox. But at this stage my money's on the module or sensors.

Does any of this say which the box is?

ah a few hundred isn't too bad, like I said, car was really cheap, so would still be worth doing. What sensors are linked to these boxes? is there an easy way of knowing which gearbox I have without getting under the car to read it off the box? I keep getting told the CVT boxes are awful, but then some places say only the FWD boxes are bad.......

with the module is it just a case of ordering a new one and swapping it out? or do they need coding in

  12. 1 hour ago, Steve Q said:

If you've bought it from a dealer in the last 30 days then they have an obligation to fix it. Or you can ask for your money back.

If it was a private seller then they might have fobbed you off. Usually a gearbox oil change is the first thing to be done if the auto gearbox starts playing up.

Hi, it was bought privately, I knew there was this fault, but it was cheap. It has Xenon lights, full heated leather interior, S-Line bumpers etc so I knew I would get my money back breaking it, but it seems a shame to break it if this is not a massively expensive fault

  13. Hi,

Recently purchased an A4 Avant 3.0 TDI Quattro S-Line with the intention of breaking it, however with the condition it is in and the spec thought I might try to get it on the road. I drove it about 10miles to the MOT centre, it wouldn't go above 4th gear but it mainly just stayed in 3rd gear. There are no dash lights on, car drove really nicely, would rev as expected, not juddery gear changes, just wouldn't go up past 4th (even when switched to manual and using the flappy paddles). When I purchased it they said that they had recently done a gearbox fluid and filter change and the problem came on not long after, although how much of this is true I don't know.

I have scanned with VCDS and get the following codes

  14. Hey, I have tried looking online and everywhere seems to point to slot 3 for the horn relay, I don't have a connector there so which is my horn relay and does it control anything else?

My horn doesn't work, fuse looks OK so thought relay was next logical check.
