    Hi Paul,
Another very interesting post about the space-saver spare wheel. I thought I'd take another crack at trying to fit all the components and have ordered the wheel & toolkit from The Wheel Shop.

Where did you get your foam insert from? I believe I'll need the securing nut too. Where did you get that? Is there anything else I'll need?

    All the best,

    Chris

    Hi again Paul,

I've got a space-saver spare wheel and have just tried fitting in. Only problem is I cannot see how to fit the black plastic cover back on, there are no slots for the cover to slide into. Here are a couple of pics. Any help appreciated.

    All the best,

    Chris Bryant

  3. Hi everyone,

I finally found the problem of my Nextbase dashcam not holding its battery charge.

Basically, my own fault! 🤲 I found a connection was not fully in place after all the other tests I had done. Everything is now working as it should. Fortunately I do not need a replacement battery at this time...hooray! I did wait for a few days before reporting back on this to make sure all was well.

    Happy days! 😄

    Hello Chris,

If this were mine, I wouldn’t be opening my wallet until I had checked prices at Battery Magastore, Tayna and other on-line suppliers - delivered to your door, usually within two days.
If you search them on EBay you will get free delivery.
I would go with Varta/Bosch or Exide, with their minimum of 4 year warranty grade.
Perhaps you could let us know how their prices compare with Halfords.
    Kind regards,

    Gareth.

    Hi Gareth,

I did check both those options but Battery Megastore was no good and Tayna has some very poor reviews - apparently they do not accept any bad reviews, which is worrying. I will look for the brands you mentioned but this is an ongoing problem that I'm attempting to sort out. See my post from a few minutes ago.
    Cheers!

there is a halfords one on ebay £120 item no 115868469601( 22miles from you)any good i was told though it would need coding to your car.  regards stephen

    Thanks for that, Stephen.

This is definitly an ongoing issue. I checked with my local Audi dealer's service and spares departments and from what info they gave me my current battery (excuse pun!) should be okay if such & such is working as normal, which it is. For them to do a test of the battery would cost £140!!! 😮So, not going that route! Plus they are asking for £322.20 for a new one!!!
The Halford's one at £180 appears to be the best deal but I'm currently working on a battery check of my dashcam which could be faulty, following directions from NextBase. It's a 4 hour process! I'll update my finding when that's completed. 🤞
    Cheers!

I’ll be following this. The only thing I know is… they ain’t cheap.

    Hi,

Yes, I know - everything seems pricey for Audis. I have looked online and saw that Halfords has an AGM 095 battery with a 5 guarantee for £180 (fitting extra, of course) but that seems too cheap really compared with others I've seen - a Bosch S3 is £282.58 from buycarparts.co.uk for instance. It's a bit of a minefield.

But is it a Gen 4 or Gen 5 model? The newer Gen 5 models started to arrive in 2019 so there was a period of crossover when they would both of been available and registered in 2019. I believe, but possibly wrong, that the mild hybrid started with the Gen 5 models?

Have you had any issues with your mild hybrid, particularly with the dedicated mild hybrid lithium ion battery or other issues associated with it being a mild hybrid?

My A4 Avant 40 TFSI was registered in March 2019 - it's a mild hybrid purchased used at 3,027 miles and bought from a main dealer (it was the service manager's car for around 4 months.) No problems with the lithium battery so far as I can tell, but I do need to replace the main battery. See my post on that subject.

  8. It looks like I'll need to replace my A4 40 tfsi Avant's stop/start battery soon as does not appear to hold it's charge.

I have connected it to a CTEK charger twice now over a few days. This came to light a while after the fitting of a NextBase dashcam insomuch that the camera stops working after a very short period.

So, I hope I can get some tips from the forum on the best replacement battery and other similar experiences of others.

  9. Hi again, Mark,

I can't find any pics of the space-saver spare I bought & returned, or the foam carrier & tool kit & locking nut. However, the wheel I did buy was a 125/70/R19 size. I just find it so frustrating that I could not fit all the components in the space! I'm inclined to give it another go, but there again I really don't want all the faff of maybe having to return the bits.
I appreciate your time & comments, Mark.

    Hi Chris,

Your pics look very much like mine and those in the opening post.

What exactly is your problem with fitting the spare and the circular foam carrier?

If you remove all the ancillaries ,i.e. the tool roll, rectangular foam carrier for the inflator with it's cover plate etc then it looks to me like the new items will drop straight in.

The new circular foam carrier holds most of the tools and the jack etc can be fitted into gaps.

My original foam carrier and cover plate are now left behind in the garage.

    Hi Mark,
Thanks for the reply. As you'll see from an earlier post of mine, I had a couple of the service/tech guys from my local Audi dealership try to fit the kit (I had tried myself plus later with help from a friend too) but simply could not make it fit! I did remove all the ancillaries.

Has your car got a lidded storage box behind the rear seats as part of the moulding? Mine is shown in the first picture.

    All the best,

    Chris

  11. Hi Mark,
I haven't been on the forum for quite a while and was very interested to hear about your sucess in getting a space-saver spare + kit for your A4. Is yours a B9 model? As I mentioned in my questions about obtaining the various parts I was told by my Audi dealership that I would need to have a whole different liner in the cargo area for the kit to fit, I do not have the sub-woofer fitted. I had all the correct parts but could not get them to fit, and that was with one of the techs from the dealership trying too.
I've pretty well resigned myself with having to do without the kit. So any further hints or comments would be appreciated.
    All the best,
    Chris

Just by way of an update on this subject. I'm in UK and just took delivery of a 2023 A4 Avant Sports Edition 40tfsi with 18" wheels. No spare wheel. My boot well looks just like the one above posted by steve335, no extra sound system kit etc in the space. I just purchased the space saver spare wheel and jack £129.95 from The Wheelshop and the foam carrier 8W0012109F from LLLParts £47.39.

Can confirm that the wheels fits on the car fine and into the boot, on the foam carrier, without a problem at all. The jack works well and all the kit fits neatly into the boot well without issue. I even found space to leave the electric inflator and gunk bottle plus a first aid kit all neatly under the floor.

Shouldn't be the battery then, I'd recommend a diagnostic check to see if any fault codes flag up.

    Hi Steve,
Car was in for a regular service on 30th June and I'd mentioned the window problem.

All sorted with a reset of the switch. Probably only took a few minutes.

  14. A couple of days ago I noticed my near-side rear window was down though I had locked the car so went to put it back up. It would not stay in the closed position after trying various methods. Obviously worrying as a security risk, plus raining! This happened last summer when temperatures were high and was fixed at my local Audi dealership - a system reset, I believe.

I called the dealership to ask for urgent help, but none forthcoming, wanted to keep the car for five days!!! 😖 Anyway, I contacted an independant Audi/VW specialist who told me what I could do to close the window which was to operate the switch one small step at a time until it reached the closed position and hold for a few seconds. It worked, 🤗 however not a permanent fix.

My car is booked for a regular service in a few days so have asked for this issue to be rectified whilst they have it, and hopefully not keep it for five days for what I am sure is a fairly straightforward reset.

Has anyone else ever experienced this problem? 🤔

  15. Hello James,
Thanks for your reply. I had seen the YouTube video you mentioned whilst researching parts needed to fit a spare wheel and went ahead and ordered them.

Sadly, and after taking the car to a main Audi dealership those parts would not fit. I think I mentioned before that a whole new moulding needs to be purchased for the cargo area to accommodate the parts involved. The technician took a long time searching for the suitable part as there were many options, and he gave no guarantee that it would work out! I called it a day, so now would have to rely on the Audi breakdown service (AA) to fix a flat tyre.

I really would have thought that somebody out there would have come up with a solution for this very irritating problem. 😟

    All the best,

    Chris

  16. Hello James,

I did submit my comments in an earlier A4 forum, but here's my experience.

I too have an A4 (Avant) TFSI 2019 model and also wanted to install a space-saver. Sadly, and after purchasing all the bits I thought I'd need from both eBay & my local Audi dealer, it proved a very complex issue! 🤔 Luckily I was able to get a refund for all those items.

My car did not come with a jack, just the (useless, in most cases) inflation kit. My dealer was helpful to a point, but it meant I would have to purchase a whole new liner for the cargo area to accommodate the necessary kit to fit the spare wheel and its sundry items. They were really helpful, 🤗 and after much time spent on their laptop trying to find a solution, could not fit the items I had bought without that particular liner. 😒
All this is down to weight saving to meet carbon emmision standards, as far as I'm aware, same goes for smaller fuel tanks!

  17. I received a message about a defective nut from "Automotive News" as follows:

Audi hasn’t been very active in terms of service recalls in North America recently, but the German automaker is now making the headlines with a rather interesting campaign. Approximately 100,000 cars from the brand will be recalled globally due to a potential displacement of the rear suspension links. This may seem like a very standard recall, however, the issue comes as a result of a previous recall.

Back in June last year, Audi recalled many cars from the A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, Q8, E-Tron models built between 2019 and 2021 to replace nuts on the rear axle suspension links that did not meet specifications. According to the bulletin released then, a defective nut could increase play between the suspension link and the hub carrier, which can result in bad wheel alignment of the rear axle.

Following the campaign, which eventually expanded to cover about 150,000 globally, Audi started receiving complaints from customers of increased tire wear and worsened vehicle handling. After its own internal investigation, the German automaker discovered that during the recall, “a part on the rear axle may have been inadvertently and unknowingly set to the wrong specifications in some cases,” as Automotive News reports.

Are you aware of this? If so, has anyone here been in touch with Audi UK about it?
