  1. Thanks cliffcoggin.Just read the forum comments on this subject. I think I will forget the remap idea .It looks like the moment you change the manufacturers ECU parameters ( by a remap ) you open up Pandora's box on the potential impact on every sensor feeding into the ECU.Which makes sense when you think about it. For the moment I will stick to getting the wheels refurbed and the pixels sorted.

I am thinking of having a remap done ,nothing too radical but a bit more oomph and better mpg would be nice. My car is an 06 190 Quattro roadster.with 100k on the clock. The car is running well although the mpg is not great, particularly on short runs around town. Would be good to hear from any of you guys that have had a remap done and and whether you thought it worthwhile. Thanks
  3. I have just made a DIY windbreak this afternoon. A piece of 6mm thick clear perspex off ebay and some velcro straps to attach it to the roll over hoops. The perspex needs a really sharp jigsaw blade to cut cleanly and then the edge needs polishing with wet and dry paper. Just taken the car out and it works well, better than the original I think. The old glass one just lifted straight out. I will probably get the the cover off and look at fixing the motor/belt at some stage but not sure if I will use the motorised one again. The car sailed through the MOT last week with only an advisory for new front discs so still feeling very happy.
  4. The windbreak has stopped working .I can hear the motor running when I operate the switch but the glass is just floating ,it can be pulled up or pushed down. It seems a common problem is the driving belt shredding but I don't think that would explain the glass being free. Looks a bugger to get to so I will leave it for the winter layup. I may even get a windbreak that velcros to the roll over hoops and just push the glass down. Happy days.Mrs T thinks it's the most comfortable 'sports' car that I have had. When I think of the cost of some of those cars (particularly the Porsche and the Lotus ) it makes me think these cars are a real little sleeping gem. e
  5. none taken
  6. Consider me suitably chastised for raising a silly question. I will do my best not to do it again
  7. I have been reading up on DMF's on various forums and it seems the life span is largely down to driving style. Drive the car gently and there is a good chance it will have a long life. So I think the question is answered
  8. I picked up on the new clutch from the service history ,it was back in 2016. No mention of what the failure symptoms were. I bought the car about a month ago as a cheap summer runaround but it is really growing on me so will be keeping it. Apart from the drivers seat heating not working I can't find anything wrong with it and I have been looking really hard ! May have a dodgy 02 sensor ,waiting to see if the light comes back on. My daily runner is a 10 reg oil burner Passat which is getting a bit scruffy but has proved totally reliable for many years so I'm reluctant to spend oodles of my hard earned pension on a shiny ,newer one which may prove a bundle of trouble. Apart from new front springs and the usual consumables nothing has been done on the Passat.
  9. Just wondering what the received wisdom is on the lifespan of these on the 8N engine . My car had a new clutch at 51k ( currently on 101 k) and on the invoice for the clutch is a note 'DM flywheel shows signs of wear but not changed on customers instruction '. There are no signs of the DM flywheel playing up but I'm just curious. My Passat has 140k on it and is still on the original DM flywheel so they obviously can last. Answers on a postcard please .........
  10. I have just had the Haldex oil changed with new oil filter at my local indie. 150 quid all in which included the oil change kit, very reasonable I thought. However, it occurred to me how will I know if the 4 wheel drive is actually working? The car will not be used much in the winter and then only in the dry weather. As I understand it the system is set up to be front wheel drive with the Haldex only driving the rear wheels when the fronts start to lose grip. I was not specifically looking for a quattro it just so happened that it was a quattro car that was the best one for the money so not that bothered either way. However,it would be nice to know if the 4 wheel drive is working . Are there any warning lights that come up if the Haldex is not working ? Thanks Jeff bso not t
  11. Well, how about this ?Didn't get a chance this morning to delve into the light issue. This afternoon took the car out as the boss wanted a few things from Waitrose . Put the top down, back from Waitrose looked like rain so put the car away in garage ,top still down.Open the door the interior light comes on . Close the door light goes off in about 20 seconds as it should.Tried it a few more times and seems to be working fine. The idiosyncrasies of running a 20 year old car ??????
  12. thanks,I will have a look this morning
  13. where is the door switch - please? I looked around the door shuts and could not see any switches .
  14. thanks davey
  15. I am referring to the bank of switches above the rear view mirror.Rocker switch in the middle push switch on either side to operate the reading lights. The push switches operate the reading lights as they should. However ,the lights do not come on when the doors are opened. The rocker switch whether it is in the 1 ,O,middle position does not appear to do anything. I doubt both door switches would give out at the same time so suspect the rocker switch. I think I need to get the switch bank out and get to the rocker switch wiring . Just wondering if anyone has done this.
