  1. Hi all, being a hardcore British Leyland/MG-Rover owner, delving into the world of German engineering seems a little daunting. On sunday i take ownership of a 1998 Quattro 2.8 V6. It's a cracking car by all accounts and having read various things on here, watching the limited reviews on youtube and owners reviews on the likes of parkers, they seem quite well put together and don't cause too many headaches. Like with anything we do in life, sometimes coming out of your comfort zone leads to some quite fun adventures and changes. The run up to Sunday is filling me with a bit of hesitation and i'm trying to convince myself i'm doing the right thing. Ok, it has an Audi badge, but, does that mean it's going to be great or a real PITA? Obviously that's for me to find out, however, the more, dare i say, spoon fed reassurance i get means that this A6 purchase is a positive thing. I know people may say that if you're unsure, walk away, trouble is, i'm a sucker for trying new things.......within reason. Am i worrying because the car is sporting an Audi badge, and i'm not seeing past the fact that it is 'just a car' and if you're handy with spanners, it's no more difficult than any other car of it's era? I think the one upside to this whole venture is that the deal is going down because the cars current owner, has, like myself, a weakness for all things Longbridge and wants to take ownership of my tatty but very reliable 214SEi. The trade is a straight swap, having acquired the Audi from a close friend, he just doesn't like the 'feel' of the car. Maybe like myself, the quality of the end product has some bearing on the skills you need to fix them yourselves confidently. My SEi cost me £150 3 years ago and has never put a foot wrong. Aside from a respray, it needs not alot else to make it a show worthy car. So really this A6 is costing me next to nothing and after long conversations with the A6's current owner, and coupled with the fact he's willing to drive 5 hours to do the swap, does fill me with some confidence that the trade is an honest one and i'm infact worrying about nothing. As long term owners of these gorgeous looking cars, i can only hope your advice and tales of experience will further solidify that i am infact doing the right thing. Thanks for reading my ramblings and i look forward to reading your thoughts and replies. All the best, si
  2. Hi all, i'm a brummie living in wales (brecon/merthyr). I run a small 300 member Austin Metro group and we are doing a little get together at the national showcaves center in wales. Obviously that Austin meet is just for the metro group i run, however, i am happy to organise a meet for the audi club if people are up for attending it? The showacves lies in the heart of the central brecon corridor and as such, the roads and views are spectacular. As with the metro group, i intend to camp over with a few of the group and the following day go for a really nice drive around the amazing roads through brecon and the black mountains. With the showcaves being a family place aswell, it's good for our members who may have children or families who will enjoy the on site petting zoo, national caves and dinosaur park. The caves are fairly pricey but amazing to see. camping is cheap and i am happy to organise the get together of enough people are up for it. I notice you don't have a rep for this part of the world so i'm also happy to do this if people are happy. Be nice to meet a new group of people. all the best, si
  3. i will do indeed. The tyre issue was a one off around 5 years ago. The service was done last november. Is there a haynes manual for the car or an electronic owners repair manual i can download?
  4. A very interesting point you make there and thank you for bringing that to light. I did wonder about that and i'm also wondering is it yes, a poor ownership period with the car coupled with buying budget tyres for a vehicle that really needs a better quality tyre or is it just poor choices made during that period of time. The current owner has taken the time to fix various issues and has also given the vehicle a fully documented service recently. Having owned several MG ZT's and Rover 75's that haven't been well cared for, i understand why you'd point this out. I am a fairly skilled DIY mechanic and i am confident that because of it's moderately low mileage for it's age, there's still some enjoyment to be had. The red metro was saved from the crusher and has required several months of restoration and repair. Granted, an austin metro is a little easier to work on than say an Audi, however, the principles in ownership are the same. look after it and it'll look after you. Hopefully, if i take the plunge, it'll be a positive chapter in the cars life and one which will maybe quash any fears i have about owning such a complex (compared to a metro) car.
  5. Steve, thanks for the welcome and heads up. It seems to be just general car stuff then really. I'll ask the seller about the air-con situation as a matter of enquiry. The guy is actually having a 214SEi off me in exchange and is driving all the way from Newcastle to Cardiff in the A6. This obviously fills me with some level of confidence because i doubt he'd risk driving a shed all that way. Insurance is fairly cheap aswell so i'm happy with that. Hopefully all goes well and we have some decent years motoring from the Audi.
  6. Hi everyone. Just on the fence now as to whether to leap delve into Audi ownership and grab this 1998 A6 2.8 30v Quattro. I had a 1998 A4 for 6 days until a van driver ploughed into the back of me. I'm very cautious of repair bills etc and being a british leyland fan boy, this is out of my comfort zone. The car seems genuine and it's MOT history is no worse than any other 20 year old car having needed plenty of tyres and the odd CV joint here and there. I've been told that they can be bullet proof and i shouldn't have too many issues in my ownership but wanted to ask the people in the know if it was a wise move. Belts are due which Audi have quoted me £650 to do which of course includes the parts needed to do the job. A local garage quoted me £1000!!!!! Anyway, hopefully i'll get some good insight into what ownership of these can be like. Many thanks, si (forgive the pictures of my metros, these are my prides and joy)
