Spoke to Audi uk, they put me on hold, and although they were polite, not much use, offered to book me in for a diagnostic at Poole Audi. Not been brave enough to ask how much that will be, Poole Audi just rebuilt the show room and work shop!

Steve, thank you, The universal cradle works perfectly with a micro USB cable, but not with a USB C cable. Put USB C cable into a bullet USB in the !Removed! lighter socket and it charges. So both items work independently but not together. All genuine Audi parts. Tried it on another A4 it exhibited exactly the same symptoms
