I can't believe why Audi haven't yet got their act together on this and Audi dealerships are actually releasing brand new cars to new owners with this obvious fault.
It's on internal memos and on customer alerts sent to recent owners on Texts and email. All they need to do is a Full Factory reset in the pre sales new car preparation, preferably in the showroom just before customer pickup. As they say, it's not rocket science!
This fault obviously develops between factory and dealership while the car is being moved between transporters and ships in it's pre-setup state. Perhaps the mover/driver switches on the MMI and fiddles with it, who knows? This shouldn't matter, but with this particular Software release, it does, and the MMI needs to be returned to the Factory defaults state with a reset.
Audi should not be releasing cars in this state, now this problem is well known. Very poor.
IMHO

I am glad I found this forum as it has helped me to find that I am not the only one having a problem with MMI.
I took delivery of a brand new Audi A3 saloon two weeks ago and have been constantly losing radio favourites. I have booked my car into the local Audi dealer where I bought it later this week with the hope they can sort it. I will hold off restoring factory settings in the meantime.
Hi Alan,
Yes, if it's booked in, you might as well let them do it. As some dealerships discussed previously on this topic are pretty dumb and unaware of this solution, you might want to point out the following official SMS text sent to recent owners containing the link to the official memo describing the solution:
"Important news about your Audi MMI settings. If your personal settings are resetting when you restart your vehicle, you can resolve the issue by resetting your MMI system.
Find out how to do this at https://www.audi.co.uk/uk/web/en/audi-world/settings-reset.html?123. Please only reset your system if experiencing the issue described. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
To stop, text AUDI BLOCK to 60070."Good luck

When I started the car today, having not drive it at all yesterday, I didn't click 'Continue' after the usual 'Remote access rights' message and the virtual cockpit did display the navigation map as I had left it 2 days ago.
5 mins later, I got the "Audi connect installation: Installation error. Please contact support" message that I sometimes see but all my other settings seemed correct.
Then after leaving the car for 10 mins and starting it again, it had reverted back to the date and time for some reason.
Also on version 4143.
Ted, what "users" have you defined to the car MMI? Just a Key User?
I have myself defined as Key user and my wife as a Local User. My physical key activates the "Key User" when I unlock the drivers door. My wife's physical key activates the local User and her associated settings (she likes different radio stations to me) when she opens the drivers door. I think this is how the MMI system is designed to operate, but there's not a lot of help in the manual as to how to set it all up for shared use scenarios.
I'm wondering if maybe, in your case, the MMI is selecting different "users" or even the Guest User?
Only an idea.

I'm glad you have your replacement car. Software level is obv a new one. Let's hope they've developed and tested it properly this time around! They've certainly had enough time since this problem first appeared.

Gordon, GordonP and Jan,
A couple of weeks ago I was really miffed because I hadn't had time to do the Reset and everyone seemed to be fixing their cars ... But now I feel very fortunate because following my reset, mine is now working perfectly and you guys have got further niggling problems! I haven't received any compensatory offers though.😮💨. I hope you get your niggling problems sorted out soon.
I'm retired, but my whole working life was in IT mostly on the technical system programming side. I must say that I cannot understand why this Software fault was not picked up during what we used to call Alpha, Beta or Pilot testing ! But when the fault got through and appeared in the first production vehicles, it's even more alarming that Audi didn't jump into action immediately with an incident team and analyse and sort out the problem producing a temporary fix within a day or two. In my day, my resignation would have been demanded a number of times if my team(s) had been this poor in response.
Jan, it sounds like you've got a really troubled car there with an alarming safety issue. I hope everything works fine on your replacement vehicle.

I tried this; it didn't work for me. The previous two attempts by the dealer didn't work either. They have now agreed to replace the car, just waiting a date to collect it. Hopefully the Audi workaround will work on the replacement
Hi,
Do you mean you tried this soft Reset? Because that's not going to clear this problem. You need a full car reset to factory defaults which you access via the Car and System Maintenance menus. This is documented on several posts here including one of mine. Or you can see the official Audi advice here :
https://www.audi.co.uk/uk/web/en/audi-world/settings-reset.html?123
This is the same thing really. The display goes blank a couple of times for several minutes and it's important to just wait and not touch anything, the display will come back.
Good luck

Picked up my Q3 and the wife’s A1 on 1st September. Both vehicles were losing favourites and displaying the set up menu on starting even though set up was done many times.
Thanks to Mick for his advice about the Audi advised solution for resetting the MMI.
The procedure has fixed both my vehicles.
Be sure to use the vehicle code from your Audi Connect Activation Card when setting the system up again to get all the connect services.
Nice one Mick.
John,
I'm glad it worked OK and seems to be working for others.
I can't believe Audi have been, and still are, handing over new cars with this problem. I do hope they are now performing this procedure as part of the new car prep, if the factory can't actually manage to load proper, tested software in the first place.

Hi folks, one last question on this.
Everything on the MMI now seems to function as it should, thanks to the persistence of the folks on this forum, however I have noticed one thing. Maybe not related, but thought I'd ask.
The Audi virtual cockpit settings seem to return to the date and time, irrespective of what I leave them on, Consumption, Trip computer etc.
Is this by design, or is this another Software related issue?
I thought I saw someone mention this previously in this conversation, however they had the dealer factory reset via the laptop, whereas I did this manually through the MMI using the Key Card as instructed.
Sorry Gordon, I've had most symptoms mentioned on this forum but not this one.
I hope you get it sorted soon!

Hi all,

I reckon it would be worth notifying the dealer about that message even if nothing needs to be done at the moment. It would ensure it is recorded by Audi in the vehicle history so that the company can not claim in the future to not knowing about it.
I shall mark your message earlier today as the solution, and hope we don't have cause to reverse that decision.
Correction: I don't seem to be able to mark it as solution. I guess you need to do that yourself.
I'll post the text I received from Audi UK which gives a link to the now official Audi procedure.
I don't know how to mark a post here as a "solution", but I guess it would be best to do it to that one. Is it an option somewhere?
As for the error message. It appears randomly, but it may be due to low level of the LTE signal which is particularly low at my home. Doesn't happen that often to me though. For instance, I've used the car several times today and I've not had the message at all.

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who contributed to finding this fix.
I picked up a new A3 Sportback BE two weeks ago and was demented with the constant reset bug, or whatever was up with the MMI.
I recently performed a full Factory reset and used the Keycode (card) to set everything back up.
So far, everything seems to be working as expected.
One observation I have is that I occasionally get an error "Audi Connect Services Installation Error Contact Support", but as far as I can tell everything works as it should.
Licenses are valid and News, Weather etc all work fine, plus I'm retaining all my Radio and SONOS settings.
Anyone got any idea what this error may be in relation to, or is anyone else getting this error?
Thanks
Gordon
Gordon,
I get that "error" randomly as well. But there doesn't appear to be anything wrong or missing. I think we just ignore. 👍

Well now,
AUDI UK have just released an official fix this problem, which is of course a full MMI reset to factory defaults.
I just received, and presumably you have received, a text and email with details.
They don't mention one or two precautionary things that we have discussed on this forum, but I guess they didn't read all of our entries! 😁.
Do you think they got the solution from us?
Anyway, mine is perfect and stable now like some others on here. Thanks to all you contributors for your indulgence and of course contributions.
Good luck everyone
Mick

By the way,
Now my MMI is stable and not constantly losing settings, I have set it up so that when I use the car, my physical key activates my Key User ID and all the associated MMI settings.
When my wife uses the Q3 I have set it so that her physical key activates a Local User, and so she gets her own MMI settings such as Radio stations favourites etc. If we had electric seat positioners, those would change as well.
So, I'm glad the MMI seems to be fully working as it should.

Indeed you are going to find more European cars with nanny state features whose default setting is "on" every time you start the car.
Agreed. ☹️
Sorry, not the the direct topic of this stream, but, when it's working properly, the MMI is quite modifiable with loads of tailoring options that hardly anybody uses. I'm going to have a look at making that audible speed warning menu item easier and quicker to get to, as a favourite or shortcut. Hopefully make it just a touch on the main screen to toggle it off, after switching on the engine.

Hi everyone
After a number of phone calls finally got my Dealership to do a full reset, which I did remotely over the phone, while they did their thing on a laptop at the Dealership.
So far so good, but it's not perfect.
There are four areas that are still flaky, or just are not retained.
First is on the central display of the Virtual Cockpit, which despite my efforts to select, say consumption, as the setting, rather that date and time, will always go back to date and time.
Second is the Speed Limit warning which will not retain either, the speed threshold, or the fact that I don't want it beeping at me when I go over what the car believes is the prevailing speed limit.
Third, is that the Sonos sound settings are not always retained, annoying, but not a show stopper.
And lastly, the car will occasionally change the colour of the ambient settings, again annoying but not a show stopper.
Is anyone else experiencing similar niggles ?
Jan, sad to hear that this is Audi's permanent solution, and my software is the same as yours.
cheers
Gordon, the speeding audible warning, as Jan says, is a setting that always resets at every ignition turn on regardless of this horrible MMI problem. There should be a hackers way around it using the Engineering Red menu but I'm not going to play with that, we have enough problems getting the MMI to do it's regular thing! 🙂

Newcastle Audi have now advised me that the temporary fix applied to my car is now the permanent fix and there will be no December update. They have had 2 attempts at mine without success. Before I have a go myself and revert to factory settings, could someone let me know the version of the MMI software that seems to be working. Mine is currently 3A.22-233200.. Thanks
The MMI software version seems to be the same as yours across all models. The overall software version is 4142 on a Q3 and 4143 on an A3, I think. Your media driver seems to be slightly later than mine here:

1 week on - update
Hi everyone,
I carried out the fix - full reset to factory settings one week ago and set up the system again from scratch and I have had no problems with losing settings or favourites. Mick, I have set myself up as the Key User and have had no major issues. During the reset I used the code on the credit card they give you as part of the set up.
I did have a small issue on Wednesday night driving home from class when the screen went blank and as it reloaded I noticed it tried to go back to default settings. I immediately hit the soft reset button and it all loaded back up perfectly. And have had no problems since.
The only slight issue I have is that my phone does not automatically connect with the car first thing in the morning. I have to connect it manually and then it connects automatically for the rest of the day. I can live with that.
thanks
Yes, just to confirm, after the Full Reset I followed the Setup program which, like yours, asked the scratch card Code and my email address, but didn't need a password, maybe because I was setting up a Local user.
Yes I think they've changed the way phones connect depending on whether they are smartphones or not. It looks like it connects with Bluetooth first but if it's a Smartphone it uses the same ID to connect the phone to the car's WiFi hot-spot instead, if you give it permission. I have known mine to drop that WiFi connection and not auto re-connect, needing me to force a Bluetooth reconnection. It then seems to sort itself out again. This happened to me a couple of times weeks ago and has been OK ever since. This is regardless of the MMI settings issue.
Cheers

OK, yesterday morning I added my Audi Connect ID as the Key User. (After doing a Full Reset through the MMI, the car went into setup and I just initially setup a Local User which worked fine for four days keeping the settings as it should.)
So since I added and switched to the Key User everything is still fine and settings stable plus my Sat Nav destinations from my previous Q3 automatically loaded into this car.
This is now definitely fixed and running as it did on my previous Q3. Nearly a week and I've used the car many times in and out of the area with no problems or surprises.
-
So far so good! The full Factory defaults reset looks to have done the trick.🤞
I am still running with just a Local User as described on my previous posts. So no Key User logged into the Car. I was a bit suspicious of doing the Key User at first, just wanted to get the car MMI stable. Tomorrow I will try logging in the Key User and switching to it. If it causes problems, at least I know I can Full Reset again and get to all good with a Local User!

Thanks Mick - so just to check. You don’t delete your mobile app or your profile from the app. You simply log back into again.
likewise you now have two users listed in the car?
No I didn't delete the app or my "My Audi" profile. I just made sure I logged out of the app. Just thought it best to not be connected and killed Bluetooth on the phones in case they tried to automatically connect in the middle of everything.
I set up the car so far with no Key User just local, so if I log into the app it can't connect to the car anyway. For the moment, that's OK while I test it out with just a local user

I reset to factory settings and used pin off the key when setting it up new and that was Wednesday. After numerous days and the car sitting I still have all my settings today.
so seems the way forward is to reset everything to new. I’m on 4142 software though so not sure whether it’s only working on that.
clearly the more people coming forward they are having to fix it!Hi everyone,
I finally had some time to do a full reset as Jess above. Mine is a Q3 Sport with software level 4142.
I'm in the "Russian Roulette" period still, still holding my breath when i turn the key, but it's been well over 24 hours now, I've used the car a few times, and settings are still intact. From new the MMI had been clearing settings 2 or 3 times a day!
So yesterday I logged out of My Audi app and switched off Bluetooth on all our phones! Then I restored the car to factory default settings using the MMI Car and System Maintenance menus. After the warnings, it's a good few minutes seemingly doing nothing but it does spring to life. Mine said it had reset everything apart from Key User. I wondered if that was a problem but ignored that and pressed Restart, it was then a few more minutes with the MMI screen Black!
... it came back in the Setup program with a welcome message. Being extremely cautious about the Key User thing, I setup a Local User name. This still required me to sign into the car setup program with the email used on My Audi app, but no password, just the Vehicle code from my Audi scratch card that was supplied with the keys. A few more simple questions and it setup successfully.
Later, feeling confident, I added my phone via Bluetooth and it all setup fine and connected automatically to the car WiFi hot-spot.
I haven't setup the Key User, just seeing how it goes over the weekend.
I hope it remains stable and this story helps a few more of you.
Cheers,
Mick

Update -
so reset my car Wednesday and got in Thursday morning and all was still there. Came home Thursday lunch and haven’t been in my car until this morning.
at first thought it had all reset again.. however my MMI screen took 1 minute to load and when it did it asked to choose my user or a new one so I clicked me as always but then it said something about configuring user settings and then the radio station changed from radio 2 to the one I left it on and all my settings were there that I had done
so seems the reset has possibly worked for me. Will see how it goes for the next week but fingers crossed it’s resolved.
Thanks for the update, that does sound promising. Having had a Q3 and Q2 before this troublesome one, I can tell you that the weird stall for a minute and choosing the User just happens now and then but not that often. Happened on my previous cars, seems to be an underlying quirk of the MMI but it seems to sort itself out OK.
I will be trying out the full reset like you but really busy at the moment needing the car to go here and there.
-
Thanks everyone, this really does help others and give them confidence and information to go to their dealerships or do their own Resets or what I call Factory Settings. It's an OK procedure, I always do it before handing in my "old" car in order to clear all personal settings, like Key user, phone IDs, contacts, Satnav destinations etc.
My dealership performed what they called "sleep mode" on the car, presumably an Engineer type thing and this "forced an update", which was not a Factory Settings reset because my personal stuff was still all there afterwards.
In any case, it didn't work for me but had worked previously for Peter who is also at Southend Audi. They won't give me details of all that but said it was under advice from Audi. When I asked about a Factory Settings Reset, they were oddly reluctant. I'm going to do it myself anyway as they have gone a bit quiet about it all.

I’m sure someone has suggested this already but would it be a good idea for everyone to say which version of the MMI software they have?
As I’ve mentioned previously I’m on 4143 & after I reset it myself it has so far not lost any of my settings.
So, as Dan has mentioned, just to be clear, is this the procedure you used to do your own Reset? This is from my Q3 manual page 230 ...
