My mate has replaced gearboxes, engines etc... he's going to do the cambelt at same time. He's just done a 6 speed conversion on his caddy van.

Hi jasonj,

Yes rebuild is an option, the plan is to split the box to explore the extent of the damage once off. However I've just purchased the vehicle. A driveshaft seal is pouring oil out and i believe it has been driven around in it's current condition for a long time. With the noise it is making I'm not holding out much hope to it being salvageable.

I have not been able to find a NBX box for sale within the UK that isn't priced stupidly, so am looking to other options.

Many thanks,

Hi, Wayne, the fact that transmission fluid is still pouring out is a good sign as it is an indication there is still oil in the box. Which means it probably has not been driven around that much as it only holds 2 litres  and so would not any left in the box to drip out ?

Before the gearbox is removed ,it might be advisable to fit a new Driveshaft seal or indeed Driveshaft.

Is the noise emanating " coming from " the Driveshaft, or the Gearbox ? if you jack up the front end and rotate the front wheels , does  it make a noise ?

Before you start to remove the Gearbox you can get an internal inspection using an Endoscope, through the Gearbox  draining and filling plugs. But in order to establish the damage if at all any, this element needs to be carried out by someone that is conversant with this gearbox so they can identify any discrepancies.

You have not mentioned any fault codes from OBD etc

Other factors : How many miles has this vehicle covered ?

Note: The Gearbox in this vehicle does have inherent faults . Jasonj

PS Have you considered requesting a replacement on sites such as these eg, GEAR BOX WANTED, see what happens . I know you can advertise cars for sale on here as saw one recently . But I am new, so do not know . The more established members such as " Gareth- Magnet " will advise you if its allowed .

I can collect a LHX next week. I have read that this box will work but I am unable to back that up with anything solid.

Thanks

Hi Wayne, plus points are:

The fact you can go through the Selector Gate with ease .

The Gear Stick did not show signs of vibration , considering you were changing gears whilst at low revs .

The Drive shaft will need replacing .

Have you considered removing the Drive Shaft and then testing ? Jasonj

I don't believe there is anything wrong with driveshaft. All the noise comes from within the gearbox. There is no play on driveshaft and the CV joint is good. The lack of 5th and 6th gear can not be caused by a driveshaft and I've disconnected the linkages and manually gone through the gears with same results

Hi Wayne,  is the stabilizer rod in the right place. if this comes loose 5th and 6th will not work

If it is not check alignment .

what 's the history of this vehicle ? was it working once and then 5th and 6 stopped working . was there a sudden noise when driving , has the stabilizer rod been put into the wrong place.? Jasonj

Sorry not sure what your referring to as a stabiliser rod. History is unknown, vehicle was sold as in working order. Clearly not lol.

I believe it has been driven for a period of time with no oil in the box. I think the gearbox was over filled before sale as I have cleaned more than two liters up off the floor.

There is also signs that the casing has been split previously as there is rtv sticking out around the joint

HI Wayne, The "RTV silicone is the give away "

This might indicate that the Stabilizer Rod . this is 30cm long and is located over the transmission and it has two possible places it will fit into .. It has to go into the one furthest away . and if this has been replaced and put into the wrong place  which is very possible , or it may have come loose which would explain why 5th and 6th do not work .

Its quite difficult to overfill a gearbox because it runs out of the box , that's how you know its full.Jasonj
