2018 SQ7 - rough idle on cold starts/ engine judder

Featured Replies

Hey guys i own a 2018 sq7. On cold starts maybe 2/3 out of 5 of them the engine runs very lumpy/ rough for the first 30 seconds or so. I've spoken to a number of owners, all of whom are having the same issue and they are all too struggling to find the root cause.  I've checked the codes and there are no error codes

I'd really appreciate responses from people who have managed to resolve this issue. Can someone please help ?

Thanks.

Apparently it is a known fault. I had it on mine - took it for a Stage 1 and they updated the software from "version 1 to version 2", and it appears to have solved my judder. Also proving you don't need Audi to resolve this issue.

Hi, did you find a fix for the issue?

Hiya mate yes! All solved

update the ECU software from 1004 to 1005. That’ll fix the cold start issue. Join the SQ7 UK & Europe owners Facebook group

I've got an OBD11 scanner - is there any way to see the software version on that. I had a stage 1 on mine recently, and the garage said they always flash to the latest firmware. However I'm still getting the judder, so feel a little sceptical.

I think this query would be best answered on the ODB 11 Forum and not a general Audi fan base forum.

Not saying you wont get the right answer here, I just think the guys over there would be in a much better position to be able to answer that question than a simple occasional end user.

For what its worth looking at the the image in this link https://imgbb.com/LCtLsH3,  I think you can see what software is installed but i wouldnt swear on it.

Hiya mate, if you are anywhere near the Midlands i'd be more than happy to check the version for free. Sorry i've just checked my notifications. Cheers.

Hiya mate. Yes your OBD11 scanner should tell you the ecu software version. It'll be either 1004 or 1005. If you've got 1005 and still getting the judder then the issue is more than likely carbon build up in the intake manifolds and other components. Thanks to the emissions hardware!

Take care.

Thanks for the reply. I've looked everywhere in OBD11 and can't find the software version - even noting the link above.

I've got a Topdon AirDiag 600, might have to try that, but if it is 1004 then I don't know how to get it updated other than to take it back to the tuners. I'm worried they did nothing with the car, the Stage 1 resulted in no 0-60 improvement (not a boy-racer I'd add, but it's a good metric to test).

The app I use is OBDeleven VAG on my iPhone. Its a black colour app icon with a white colour animal with the text 'for VAG' on the bottom

Take a look, its definitely in one of the sub options. If you struggle happy to meet up at a services nearby and check for you. No bother at all

THat's very kind of you. I'll have to have another look - it's the app I'm using and I've unlocked the ultmate sub or whatever they call it. Just checking engine info (as per the above pic) I saw the info breakdown but software version was not on it. Puzzling.

Not sure why mine is saying 0001.

Hi @peetee7, just wondering if you've got any ideas on the above? Do I need to take it back to the tuners to get them to upgrade again?

Does anyone know what software version 0001 means in relation to others which say 1006?

Hello, I'm calling from Sarajevo Bosnia... I have a problem with my 2016 Audi SQ7. On cold start, the Audi starts shaking a lot, the RPMs jump up and down and after 1 minute it stops. I fixed the DPF, EGR, intake valves... the injectors are all working as they should. When I removed the DPF, on cold start, there's a lot of white smoke coming out of the vehicle while there's that shaking, and when it stops, a little white smoke comes out. Has anyone had a similar case?

Do you have a video of how the problem sounds and looks like?

Hi @Elmir sq7

As mentioned above, I've read that this is a software issue and many people have had their software updated and it solved the problem. OBD11 says there is an updated software for mine, however when it went back to Audi recently they disputed this and said I was on the latest version - go figure. So I've still got the cold start issue too.

Yep, SQ7 2020 tdi.

@scottiecb19

Do you have any videos of the engine running, so we can compare to see if it's the same problem?
