Magnet Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 Thanks Ian, What is it you are trying to find out, and why? Useless piece of information to prove there is little new in motoring design:- Mid 70s Austin Allegro had a âquorticâ steering wheel. Police were using Allegros as the successor to the Morris 1000 Panda cars, and certainly didnât favour them, since you couldnât âfeedâ the steering wheel through the driver grip. Kind regards, Gareth. Â
enc Posted August 12, 2024 Author Posted August 12, 2024 It appears to be something some drivers find desirable and  want for their cars. I have one in my a3 and tbh, I find it a but arkward in that you are conscious of its presence when âthreadingâ the steering wheel through your hands where as with a circular wheel you just âthreadâ without thought. Iâve wondered if it was to offer additional leg room for those that have their steering wheel positioned low đ¤đ¤Ł
Magnet Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 For your âI find it awkwardâŚâ -see my reply to you re. Allegros - any help Ian? Re. Why shape it such? Handy for fatties bellies?? Am I allowed to say that? Kind regards, Gareth. 1
enc Posted August 13, 2024 Author Posted August 13, 2024 (edited) I do remember allegros and their squared off steering wheels unfortunately    A friends dad had an estate ⌠hideous thing. Funnily enough, there are a few retro modded ones appearing on the car scene  Back to todays Audi, Iâm starting to wonder if itâs purely for cosmetic reasons âŚto make it look like a F1 Steering wheel đ¤đ   Edited August 13, 2024 by enc 1
Magnet Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 Thanks Ian, Boiling it down - fad! No useful reason by what I can see. Allegros? Iâd much rather own half a dozen Allegros than half a dozen Audis. They are appreciating. They are simple to maintain and repair. They attract attention- if that is what anyone wants.Â

Magnet Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 Got it. Thatâs why we are all different, and some want flat bottomed wheels to demonstrate they are indeed different!Â

mike71 Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Austin allegros, bl**dy awful cars, had one as my company car years ago. Felt like driving on a floppy sofa and kept going wrong. And yes, flat bottom steering wheels are for drivers of a large stature đ
