1991 Audi Cabriolet 2.3 Starting issues

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, I started repairing my Cabriolet. It's from 1991, powered by a 2.3 engine (ke jetronic) which has some really annoying issues.

The car stayed in my garage since 2021-ish, barely moved or started. It worked without any issues till then (had it since 2014).

This summer i got it out, replaced the radiator, fan relay, and sent it to body shop for new paint.

The car started right away after all this years with fresh petrol and an oil change. But here's where the issues began.

Now the car starts the first time but if i turn it off, i can't start it back on only after 3-4 hours.

And it does not need to get warm when it starts the first time, even if it runs only for 10 seconds and i turn the engine off and try to start it back on, it will just crank endlessly.

I noticed now that on the first start it has sometimes a slight misfire and a bit of petrol smell outside. I also need to keep it a bit reved up for aprox. 30 sec. so it doesn't die.

Other than that the car runs perfectly fine, it pulls nicely, it doesn't die.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Thank you

Have a look at this post: https://www.benzworld.org/threads/k-jetronic-troubleshooting-from-a-couple-of-specialists.1667628/ - Mercedes, but I believe the same engine.

There's a list of things which can cause similar problems to what you're describing. I'd start by cleaning the MAF and move onto fuel pump.
