Mk1 Coupe model/engine/drivetrain recommendations please

Featured Replies

Apologies as this may well have been asked before but I did search and fail to find similar threads. I am considering the purchase of a Mk1 TT Coupe 1.8T. I owned a 2004 Roadster FWD and thoroughly enjoyed it and now have a hankering for a coupe but which one would people recommend? I think I want a 225 BAM Quattro but are they likely to be more trouble than a 180 Quattro? Clearly I can assess the merits of one that has service history versus one without, one with modifications and one without as well as the various different road tax rates. I am reasonably happy to assess the condition when presented with one. What I am really after is feedback on which one is the sweet spot of the 1999-2005 Mk1 as an ownership experience for a 50+ year old with moderate DIY repair and maintenance skills and workshop equipment. It won't be a main car but should get enjoyed once or twice a week for a bit of retro fun while I work on my 1988 Coupe GT.

Hi I don’t think I can truly answer your question regarding which TT is the best between 1999-2005, but I’m selling mine which is a 2001, 225 BAM quattro☺️ and its fun to drive! I just posted it today happy to answer any questions and open to offers thanks!

Hi Meera and thanks for your response to my post. I choose to believe that no other responses means there is no best option so I will follow my instincts and go for a 225 BAM Quattro however with my 1988 Coupe GT occupying the garage the TT would be outside most of the time so I need a Coupe and not a Roadster. I had a 150 FWD Roadster a few years back and that was a lot of fun. Yours looks great with great history but as I'm not interested in buying I would say that at £1200 you are greatly under pricing it. I have been looking for some months now and prices are rising for good ones with good history. I think with the history you have and the apparent condition (plus summer is near) I would at least double that price or maybe even chance it at treble for a while. I wish you luck!
