  1. i can see oil or water being blown out .. but at the same time ? guess this one is for the experts to comment on. i will watch this one with interest. ken
  2. first thought is blown head gasket. video does not work for me i.e it does not run only shows a static picture of engine
  3. This problem was reported earlier on this forum. it was suggested that the ECU overheated causing this type of problem. unfortunately no feedback came from the poster as to whether this fixed the problem. it would be great if people posted a reply to fixing a problem.
  4. Steves right, i had a 1.8 a4 avant for many happy years motoring. car was killed in an accident . i chose a A3 2tdi diesal without to much thought . it has power in buckets full for me, but i have to say WAY to much for my needs, as i only do light town work and the occasional motorway trip. i only do about 10k a year and in all honesty this machine as much as i love it ,it is wasted as my needs do not really warrant a machine of this power.
  5. thanks for your reply Steve.when i get some time i will check out your recommendations. ken
  6. i recently bought a A3 2L TDI 2007 with 14700MILES on the clock. first time i bought a diesal ,it came with 'full service history'. on careful inspection this 'full service history' became very suspect. several entrys were the same stamp with items ticked with the same colour ink and in such a way as to my opinion by the same person in one sitting , if you get my drift. anyway the engine sounded ,good, to my ear and ran ok. it smoked a bit on start up , blue smoke. to be sure of the timing belt i had it replaced along with the other belt and had an oil change. half shaft gaitors were shot, not picked up on the recent MOT provided by the seller, not sure as to the quality of the MOT, changing the oil did make a difference to the sound of the engine. i also did a fuel additive, after the first 400 miles it had made an overall difference , now on the third full tank with the additive and on a run i have had 50mpg. i still have a whistle on low revs up to 30 mph but is livable , would appear to have been a lack of maintenance or running the oil to a low level resulting in bearing deterioration on the turbo charger. had my last Audi for 19 years 1.8 petrol A4 Avent
  7. never owned a diesel before never mind a turbo . so, sorry if this sounds stupid , is it normal to hear a whine /whistle when accelerating. bought this on the rebound after my a4 1.8 petrol was written off, had it for 19 years.
  8. listened to both recordings to me it has the makings of a bearing lubrication failure somewhere. two man job to pinpoint the source .
  9. what would they do to refurbish a scrubbed wheel. i have front wheels that have been scrubbed on the curb.
  10. i am surprised by the split gaitor as not an MOT failure as in the past my audi was failed on a split gaitor.
  11. just bought my a3 tdi auto privately from a very nicely spoken person whose reason for selling was that it was bought for his wife who has since acquired invalid car. seemed a reasonable story. ran ok no apparent knocks or excessive smoke. On reading the 'full' service history and a service receipt things began to fall apart. the service book on close inspection showed four service stamps in a row with all sections ticked as done IN THE SAME INK AND COLOUR and i strongly believe by the same person in one sitting the timing belt was reputed to have been done at approx 100k miles. on a service receipt for april this year it charged for for an oil change and made some reference to the cv gaitors.. i did phone the garage that did the work/service to ascertain what the reference to the cv gaitors was for, had it been work done or an advisory. He could not say, looks dodgy . At this stage i was prepared to play on the side of caution and have the timing belt and aux belt renewed and an oil change at the same time. When it went to the garage i mentioned the gaitor situation i found myself in and asked them to have a look to see what had or not been done.. garage duly came back on inspection to inform me that the gaitors were split wide open and the grease deposited around surrounding components also something about the bearings themselves in poor condition. MOT was done in April, make your own mind up about the credibility of an MOT This repair was explained as needing the half shafts to be replaced at a cost of £300. as i intend to keep this machine for some time i agreed total cost £890. The work was carried out and i duly used a fuel additive to top of my effort to revitalize this machine. it now runs like a dream and is at least safe from the dreaded gaitor split failure , garage's seem to love to 'find'. overall, as i did not pay a high price, initially £2000, after the spend i feel reasonably happy with my buy. on reflection paying for an AA inspection would seem to be a prudent move , considering my experience.
  12. thanks for that info, brings me up to date . as i am driving the A3 2l tdi auto i obviously do not have a clutch. as a first time automatic driver i have to admit i find driving it a great pleasure.
  13. got it, i will just pierce the silver caps with sharp object next time. Ken
  14. recieved my Hydra Maximus today and have used it . just have to say that opening the product i had trouble in opening the seals . the cap was difficult to remove and now the additive leaks when i use it . manufacturer problem, the seal was difficult to remove and the product now leaks when i use it.
  15. hi Jasper, like you i have found the Haynes manuals not to be much better than useless for working with. very interested in the Vag manual you mentioned . can you point me in the direction to find one Regards Ken
  16. what about a rolling road test. at least it would rule out road noise which is all i can hear on the vids provided.
  17. petrol ,diesel , automatic . why do you have to press the clutch pedal in before inserting and turning the ignition key? had an audi a4 avant for 19 years before it was murdered . it was always prone to intermittent faults relating to the airbags and immobilizer. the airbag problem was associated wth a bad connection somewhere which could be cleared by moving the seats , i did all the advised mods , but it still persisted, but it could always be cleared by jiggling the wires. this meant it had to be a problem behind the panels. the key problem could always be overcome with a little patience ,but for long term needed a new indution coil to be fitted. in my opinion the coil was not at fault but the connector terminals to it. sorry for the woffle , it might be of use to someone lol
  18. bin researching this question as my engine has done a few miles. my diesel has signs of blue smoke and has a strong smell of burnt oil inside the car not noticeable under running conditions only apparent when the car is garaged. one guy has no confidence in the Redex as his opinion is that it fouls up the fuel filter ? he then introduces Hydra Maximus DPF additive. feedbacks give good reviews, and on that basis i think i will give the Hydra a go. it has to be remembered what the additive is to be used for and the expected achievement. i do NOT see the use of an additive as a permanent course of action once the object of using it in the first place is achieved i.e degunk the carbon buildup in the engine and cleaning the fuel system. o.k , off to buy my Hydra and see what happens.
  19. what problems are you having with the dealership? you had a duff battery , that was changed for a new one . car now runs ? whats the problem ?
