  1. Took the car on a longish journey recently, about 15 minutes in I noticed the engine temp wasn't going above 60. It was early hours and freezing cold, so assumed that it was ambient temperature plus not driving far or fast at that point. Turned the heaters on and got no warm air and another 30 minutes later still no rise in engine temp. Thought it might be an air lock in the cooling system, so pulled over at a services, checked coolant & oil levels (both Ok). Bled the coolant lines (from the plastic screw near the windscreen), fluid came out almost straight away. Rest of the journey there and back no change in engine temp and no heat from the blowers. Got home, swapped the coolant temp sensor as that seemed the next likely culprit. Noticed that the coolant level had dropped from Max to Min, so topped up and bled again, some air came out, but again, not a lot. Started the car and left it to idle on the drive, with an occasional blip of the throttle. After a few minutes the temp started rising, got to about 80-90, so I assumed all was good. Car sat for a couple weeks, took it out last night and once again, no warm air and temp gauge sat at 50-60. Checked the rad and hoses, both are getting warm then hot as the engine runs, so assuming that coolant is actually circulating. Oil level hasn't dropped and engine is hot after being driven, so think that side of things is ok. Noticed that there does seem to be a little coolant leaking from the bottom radiator hose. Not sure if it's original, but it's definitely far from new - neither hoses or radiator have been changed in the 11 years I've had the car and up till now there's never been an issue. I'm wondering if the hose has perished and is letting air in, causing a semi permanent air leak / lock. So replacing them is the next job, except, I can't seem to find anywhere online to buy replacements - Can anyone point me in the direction of a supplier. I have the OE part numbers, but searching online either yields "Discontinued" from Audi, or hoses from other sources (such as AutoDoc) that match the part number, but look nothing like what's under the bonnet. Lastly, if it turns out not to be hoses, what should I look for next? I'm assuming the water pump is working as I can feel coolant moving through the hoses and it comes out the bleed screw. I'm reasonably sure the block is ok as it had a strip and rebuild over lockdown and hasn't done more than 1000 miles since, so would welcome any advice or suggestions. TIA
  2. Hi peeps So I have a nasty coolant leak on a piece of the steel coolant line. I've searched endlessly for this part with no joy. It runs down the side of the engine behind the oil filter casing (passenger side) and what looks like a push fit into the engine. Also attached with a bolt behind oil filter casing which Is impossible to get to. Any help appreciated 🙏
  3. Hi guys I’ve recently been having problems with my cars coolant tank overflowing and becoming red hot. The heaters in my car are only blowing out cold air and do not heat up. I’ve tried running the car with the coolant cap off and seeing if it’s an air lock. I’ve replaced the coolant tank and still having the same issue. There’s no leaks anywhere on the car other than from the overflow. The temperature of the car is staying at 90 and doesn’t fluctuate. The cars temperature heats up within 5-10 minutes of driving. What could be the issue? pressure test has also been done on the coolant system and it came back fine
  4. Engine coolant level warning light came on 4 weeks ago. The level dropped way below the minimum line. Topped it up with generic coolant from petrol station as that was the nearest garage. It’s now back to minimum 4 weeks later. And see video of hoses shaking vigorously at idle. Any suggestions on what could cause this would be appreciated. IMG_9361.MOV
  5. I own a 2015 Q3 with c.40k miles on it. Purchased a year ago from Audi. The car recently overheated. Upon inspection, I found two small canisters IN the coolant tank with small granules in the canisters. One of the canisters had broken open so I assumed that the granules were now in my coolant system. The mechanic had to replace the water pump and thermostat due to both a leak and clogging by the granules. Our assumption was that the canisters/granules were a cheap fix for an existing leak, prior to my purchase. I spoke to my Audi dealership and they told me that the canisters are normal and that Audi put them in ALL their coolant tanks! No one I have spoken to and none of my research has found anything about these canisters. Does anyone here know anything about these mysterious canisters that I found in my coolant tank and if Audi do actually put them in, and why?!
  6. I noticed a leak from a coolant elbow joint on the driver side towards the rear of the engine, by battery compartment, looking for a part online or any reference from the repair manual that I don't have. Pictures attached so show leak and location. Any help or links would be appreciated Many thanks Tom
  7. Hi, I have an Audi A3 2.0 TDI 2009 reg. About 6 months ago the car started leaking coolant - I was noticing a smell of coolant around the engine on the drivers side. The leak was confirmed by the car running out of coolant a couple of times and I had to top it up. The car never overheated during this time, I just got a warning on the dashboard and topped it up when this happened. I took it to the garage and they tested the coolant (some kind of pH test?) to see if exhaust fumes were getting into the coolant. It was decided that the headgasket had gone. The head taken off, pressure tested for leaks, a new gasket put on and when I got the car back, almost immediately I realised it was still leaking coolant - it absolutely stunk of it. And the engine light was coming on for a few days at a time and going off (the error code referred to a coolant valve being jummed open or something). The garage couldn't find a leak initially, but the car started juddering in 5 and 6th gear, running out of coolant more regularly and when I took it back they tested the coolant again and decided the gasket hadn't been fitted properly. They also replaced a part for re-circulating the exhaust fumes which apparently had got clogged up with oil and rubbish from the head going. The car went back to the garage, head the head gasket re-fitted, re-checked and I got it back. 3 days later I'm noticing a smell of coolant again, and the engine warning light has come on. Has anyone had a similar problem/any ideas what to do?
  8. H All, Would value the community opinion. I know what I should do but not what I want too! Bought a 2009 1.8 Audi A3 s line convertible 2 weeks ago. I love it! Cruse control, Leather seats 18inch rims and all for £6k .55,000 miles on the clock (around 2k under parkers guide).FSH Basically love the car until.........Oil light has come on! put 1ltr of oil in and then 600 miles later oil light is on again. Now im speaking to audi as this was on watchdog and they will fix this free of charge as its a known engine fault (Piston rings are to tight) 9 out of 10 times supply a new engine. Thinking I would take the risk as I can still return it with 30 days but then this morning the coolant light has come on too! on checking has low coolant. Could just be not checked by the dealer? Coolant looks clear and there are no drips under the car. Took about 1/2 a pint to bring up to max So my issue do I a.) Keep the car and get dealer/ Audi to pay for all of the repairs needed and hope nothing else goes wrong b.) cut my losses and return the car and get a car not as spec'ed As said I love the car and really want to keep it but I dont want to be stuck with a turkey that will cost me ££££ in the long run. If i get a new engine whats the worst that can happen??
