Hi guys 

looking for a bit of help if that's possible. My wife and I own an 2010 Audi A3. We've got a grating noise coming from the steering column. The Mrs took the car to Halfords of all places and they have said the power steering motor is failing in the steering Rack and the entire thing needs to be replaced as the motor itself cannot be sourced separately. Anyone know if that's accurate or not??????. Obviously I'd rather spend a couple of ton on a new motor instead of 600 odd on the whole unit as quoted.

If it we're mine I'd get a second opinion as I have suspicion that it could be something less serious. 

How do you know the noise is coming from the steering column? When does the noise occur?
