Using a postcode in navigation

Hi All

I have had my q5 for a couple of months now, I have worked out how to use the navigation using the speech method and the pad, but I still haven't fathom'd the mystery of putting a postcode in.. OH picked it up from dealer as I was working and says dealer put it in using the tech mousepad, but I cant get it to recognise numbers from letters.. Any tips appreciated as sometimes only a postcode will do.. Thanks
