I have a 1983 Audi Quattro - trying to find out some history - which particular chassis numbers relate to these early models

If it is a 1983 car I would say that is a WR

WR was the first 10v, 1980-87

MB is the second 10v, 1987-88

RR is the 20v, 1988-91
