Connecting phone to MMI by Bluetooth

Not sure if I'm being stupid or there's a fault with my MMI but, got a 2018 A3 S-Line and I'm trying to connect my phone to the car via Bluetooth. It just won't connect and always connects the phone as an audio (music) device, not primary phone. If I plug my iPhone in via lightning cable CarPlay starts and I can use the phone handsfree but that's not the point. I just want to jump in the car, start it up and have the phone connected automatically.

Any pointers most welcome, even if I'm being a total plank and need an app or something to allow the 2 to connect.

Btw, I've done a YouTube search on this but the MMI in my car just says 'Please Wait' when you select the phone.
