Need some Tech help with the android auto

Arrhhhhh... just changed the A6 for one 3 years younger and it's driving me mad. I am not tech savey

I just want to connect my phone to the car via blue tooth to use the phone and use the google maps opn my phone - when I try it says can't find bluetooth device.

I think I have connected via this andriod app, but I don't like it - the google maps come up but it does not dim in the dark as does the phone. and what on earth is the wierd bit on the screen on the right? seem to do nothing.

I just want to be able to use my phone hands free - that's all I dont care about the rest of the stuff.

Can anyone direct me to a simple resource or how to guide for this type of kit.
