90 Quattro Sport Project

Featured Replies

Hi, my names michael, im from Gateshead, uk

My dad passed away 2 weeks ago, and when we were chatting in his last few days he wanted us to get cracking with his 2 audis this summer and get them back on the road. He has/had a 90 quattro sport (think its a 1991) and a coupe.

So my plan is, with the knowledge of people from forums, to try and restore them both to as close to factory as possible, im not 100% on what's wrong with them as of yet, but I was planning on documenting the process of both.

Id love to hopefully get them both to show car standard (in time) and take them to shows in the coming years as a memorial to my dad.

So thats a little bit about me to say hello.

Hope everyone is well

Michael

I think that's a very noble thing to do for your dad and any advice I have I would gladly give , Dave Wise

Thanks Dave. Im really looking forward to the challenge haha i know it's by no means going to be an easy one, but it will give me somthing to focus on. Im going to pull it into his garage sometime in the next few months and start a list of things im going to need. I know its going to need a full respray, as its red, old, and been sat in the sun, so ill have to remove all the body panels.

A worthy project Michael, and I hope we can help. I suggest you also find classic car clubs which may lead you to sources of parts and specialised restorers and reconditioners.

Thats a good idea, I will have a look for some over the next few weeks. Is there any in particular you would recommend?

Hello Michael,

Re. Classic car clubs, just do an on-line search for such regional, all makes, clubs in your area, and take advice there.

If I were in your situation, I would be getting the car fully inspected before spending any money or time on it. Yes, I well appreciate the sentimental value, but being realistic it’s probably going to cost you beyond its value to renovate. Based on decades of such experiences, I apply my X 3 rule - it’s going to occupy 3 times its amount of space as when it was in one piece, take you 3 times the amount of time, and 3 times the amount of money you budgeted for. Work on this principle to avoid disappointment.
Whatever help you need will be here.

Just let us know.

Regards,

Gareth.

Yep, I plan on getting it looked at. I know the car runs and drives, has a fuel leak and needs a new battery, as my dad was telling me. His favourite pass time was stripping motorbikes and old cars to repair them, and iv helped him with loads over the years, I do most the work on my own cars (unless its something I dont want to do haha) as for the space, he has a workshop where I would be doing all the work etc so thats not an issue. Time isnt an issue as such, but would be done a few hours on a sunday afternoon, not every weekend. Money, always an issue with every project haha but I fully get what your saying. Regardless, id like to atleast give it a good shot, for sentimental reasons, not for a sale price at the end of it.

Saying that, I take on board what you have said and appreciate your input.

I’m well versed in the validity of my x3 rule Cliff!

It is indeed always worth a couple of coats of thinking about before embarking on any restoration - irrespective of the satisfaction factor or any understandable sentiment.

Yeh i fully understand what im getting myself into 😂 i mean it won't just be me, I have 3 brothers, one of which is handy with a spanner also, who is up for mucking in. The car isnt as bad as his coupe, which hasn't been started in nearly 20 years. Which is also a future restoration plan 😂

I just called into my parents house to see my mam and took a couple of pictures of both.
