High revs on start up.

Featured Replies

Hi folks. Thought I'd solved this but no. On start up my revs jump to 1400 rpm and sit there for a few minutes before dropping to 800. It's kind of anoying as If I don't sit there for a few mins, the car pulls me out of my drive.. I did read somewhere it's normal to fire up with the revs a little higher, but this can't be normal as it takes the mick waiting for it to settle. Also if I slightly tap the accelerator, sometimes it will instantly drop to the correct rpm. So something isn't right.

Anyone any ideas, common faults?

Hi Baz...welcome to the Forum!

Sounds as though idle control valve/system is sticking...could try running cleaner through the system first and see how it responds.

If not, then it would be a case of taking of various components on the intake system to check and clean up before refitting. Also, worth checking the values from the Coolant Temperature Sensor as if that is way out of range it could cause those symptoms (cold start).

Wouldn't have thought it would be at all expensive to resolve.

Let us know how you get on with it
