Buying an A5 3.2 V6 Quattro...but...

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Hoping to buy an A5 3.2 V6 Quattro tomorrow.

2008 model with just 43000 on the clock with fash.

Only concern is from inside the car whilst it's ticking over I can hear a slight whine, almost like the sound from a badly fitted car sterio with a bad earth, but its not from the stereo.

It's not annoying, it's just there and I was wondering if this was a characteristic of the V6 engine or if I should be wary.   It's had an Audi service in the past few months and it's mint.  The guys say it's just the way it sounds.

Any ideas ?

Hi John...welcome to the Forum

Does the sound increase with the engine revs or does it stay constant. Sometimes an alternator with worn bearings will sound like that and increase with revs.

Let us know how you get on with it

Cheers  Trevor

Thanks for coming back to me Trevor.

Yes it increases and decreases in line with acceleration, defo a direct sound and not via stereo/speakers, sounds like behind bulkhead for sure.

Sooner gets harder to hear as revs increase or stereo volume increases but you can still then hear it   almost sounds like you have a fork lift truck bazzing around behind the dash.

So your thinking something like alternator belt etc?

I suppose the overriding question is whether or not in an A5 with this many miles on the clock should the inside of the cabin be almost silent irrespective of what type of engine it is.

Obviously discounting the roar that you would expect when you put your foot down

Yes can be heard outside but really quiet against the engine noise, almost unheard.

Yet rather noticeable in the cabin.
