  1. cold noise could just be down to the type of oil you use, but then could be related to a dodgy injector or timing being out
  2. sorry for spamming! looks like you can get PD injectors serviced. you could probably get them all done for not much more than what it cost for one brand new one. not sure where you are in the country but i can recommend diesel bob up North, google him
  3. another thought, low compression should give white smoke, not black. still worth a check though. does it smoke when sat idling for a period of time? i mean a good few minutes? what colour is the smoke then if so?
  4. other things to try: 1. air filter, replace it as a matter of course, theyre cheap 2. check EGR, is it functioning and is it clogged (take a peak into the inlet manifold whilst you are there too) 3. possibly turbo, you'd probably hear that though if it was on its way out
  5. compression test is a good call. are your injectors serviceable (I assume yours is a PD and not sure if they are)? that would be a cheaper and probably better option
  6. just googled it, your car has got one, i bet its cloggy as !Removed! in there, have a look and blank it
  7. deffo not too old, but i can;t confirm whether your engine has one or not. they've been around for years though
  8. i'm surprised i haven't been yet, 60 - 50 - 60 - 40 .. FFS i just want to look where i'm going!
  9. take the air pipe off your EGR valve and have a look. if it's bad remove your inlet manifold and clean it, return it then blank your EGR
  10. tough call, really? not sure what i'd do, just stop in the lane with lorries flying towards you ? wouldn;t take long for someone to go round you and the lorry behind them to wipe you out. I despise smart motorways, constantly looking at the gantry to see what speed you should be doing now, constantly checking your speedo, checking to see if you should be on lane 1 or not. and then people think they are even more entitled to just chill in lane 2 and 3, even when the national speed limit comes back up. they're a joke and a danger in my eyes
  11. i need to take my inlet manifold off and take a look, mines blanked now but it hadnt been for the first 150k, i bet it looks like dog !Removed! inside there
  12. you see! blank your EGRs diesel owners! that look mild compared to some that i have seen
  13. weigh things up mate, maybe speak to someone in an audi dealer. i am a diesel advocate through and through but then i have my reasons.... These days diesels no longer carry that benefit of being superior when it comes to reliability and economy. add that to petrol versions generally being lower mileage and cheaper to buy, petrol being cheaper to buy and the lefties doing their very best to 'tax' diesel drivers off the road it seems a no brainer.
  14. yes. a faulty egr will potentially allow too much exhaust gas into the inlet manifold when on idle, causing the symptoms you describe. you'll lose nowt trying it, if it makes no difference you can tick it off the list
  15. my 530d did exactly that when the egr went on it.
  16. the affects are cumulative so will get worse with age. my unofficial advice wold be just to get rid of it
  17. if you don't do regular motorway stints you're pretty much asking for trouble.... how long is the nation speed limit section? if you can find someone with vag-com they should be able to tell you the status of it and if it needs a clean. no point paying out a couple of hundred if it doesnt need it.
  18. the DPF shouldnt cause you any problems if you do a lot of motorway miles. usually you just get sensor issues which aren't too expensive or if it gets clogged you can get it cleaned out. if it does need replacing it'll be over a grand though.. there is of course the problem that it will increase fuel consumption and make your car look like its about to self combust when it regens on the motorway.
  19. lovely looking car,. little point in remapping that yoke of an engine mind, make it look pretty then when finances allow trade it for something with a proper engine
  20. let us know how you get on. sorry i can;t be any more help, my only exposure to petrols has been 2 stroke motorbikes and old ford granadas when i was a kid banger racing, no egrs, or ecus on them! no idea, they could be being read incorrectly by your reader mate.
  21. good info that. this will be coming to a city near you soon, guaranteed! i am seriously considering buying an old petrol merc and sticking an old indirect injection 3l diesel in it good for 600bhp and plumbs of black smoke just to stick a middle finger up at these jokers.
  22. its a pain as you only have a cheapo reader. have you checked the codes against audi's version of what they are? remember they are manufacturer specific. additionally Vag Com will tell you when the code was stamped and if it has occurred since the last clear. being a petrol air would be my first suspect. although i know that a dodgy EGR valve can cause dodgy idling on a diesel, so maybe it can on a petrol. on diesels you can normally disable the EGR as simply as removing a vac pipe, might be worth checking if thats the case for your car? it will likely throw a fault and engine light but if it that causing you problems they should go,. take a look at the EGR and see if it has a small vac pipe going to it, if it does, remove it and stick a screw in the pipe and tie wrap it somewhere safe.
