Wheel bearing advice

Hi, i bought a wheel bearing and hub the other day to replace a noisy one. i noticed some come with a washer thing and some dont (mine hasnt). Does anyone know what the washer is for or where it goes and do i need it? i was planning on getting the bearing pressed into the new hub before i remove the old one so cant use the existing one.
