never owned a diesel before never mind a turbo .

so, sorry if this sounds stupid , is it normal to hear a whine /whistle when accelerating.

bought this on the rebound after my a4 1.8 petrol was written off, had it for 19 years.

 

Hi sounds like the turbo, take the inlet pipe off and see if the compressor vane bearing has any excessive movement up/down, inlet pipe being the one that goes from the airbox to the turbo, other than that it could be a split rubber hose on the circuit between the turbo and intercooler easily spotted by all the black crap around the split.
