Well that didn't take long...

I went up to Didcot today to take a look at an Audi 80 Sport (B2) in Oceanic Blue. It needs work, but isn't rusty. Most of the work stems from it running lumpy at warm, and cosmetic issues. However it was good enough, and in a nice colour, so I bought it. Mainly the cosmetic issues centre around the missing pieces of Door Trim:

Would anyone know where I can find these? it is missing them completely, so need a full set. I gather they are not interchangeable with the B3?

Not sure what the lumpiness is being caused by, but from what I understand these engines are pretty simple...

Any help will be much appreciated

Many thanks

Ben

Hello Ben,

Sounds good, and I’m sure you will treat it to a full service inc. air and fuel filters, plugs etc. before delving further into any remaining lumpy running issues.
Re. the missing trim:- worth advertising in the classic press - such as Modern Classics etc., as well as searching EBay -U.K. and Germany.
Kind regards,

Gareth.

Hi Gareth

Yes that was the first port of call really once we have it home. Thankfully it has had a cambelt done already and has a K&N airfilter, however I have no idea what state the Oil was in and the gearchange seemed a bit stubborn so that will be a given.

Thanks for the advice in regards to the trim, I have never used classic press advertising but might start scouring. In addition I will set up saved searches, only problem is I am not sure what I should call them: Side Trim? Door Trim? Door Mouldings? Rubbing strips? Might as well save them all I suppose🤨

Thank you for your prompt reply 🙂

Ben

Hello Ben,

As you say, they could be called any of your suggestions.
How were these originally fixed Ben? They could have been on plastic fixings back then ( you will obviously have spaced holes in the doors) or maybe even stuck on, although a bit early??
Apologies for being a little off putting, but you could find that any old ones you find, could come as part of a complete door, so worth searching ‘doors’ as well.
I wouldn’t totally discount the worth of going in to you friendly local Audi dealer (don’t phone) and enquiring about their policy for old stock retention/availability/ searching.
Kind regards,

Gareth.

Thank you Gareth, that isn't offputting at all. The only reference I have is this picture here from a blog post

It does seem to be stuck on, as the doors don't have any of the fixings, the lower sill trim does have holes for plastic fittings, and the sill trim is present too.

It is interesting what you said about Audi dealers as I thought support for older models was appalling these days?

Many thanks again

Ben

Thanks Ben,

’….support for older models….’ Could we’ll be right, but everything is worth a try.
Stuck on is not such good news, and I guess yours were victims of trying to pull off. I would guess this is going to limit your chances of finding good used ones - off doors. With door, so that you can carefully remove them with heat?
Perhaps a daft question, but are you sure your particular model (trim level?) was actually fitted with them when new?
Kind regards,

Gareth.

Hi Gareth

I think what happened was the owner wanted a "naked" look to the car so took all the trim off. My car is a 1986 Sport so it came with the black rubbing strips as standard

This is what the car looked like a couple years ago

This is what the car looks like now

I have not actually brought it home yet, having only viewed and put the deposit down yesterday.

However there is an Audi specialist near me so I might take it to them as a first port of call for trim, they might know where to find them
