Hello Martyn,

From what you describe, you seem to be coming up with your own diagnosis, and if so, the answer is a new DMF and clutch assembly.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

Thanx Gareth. I suspected this might be the best option. Fortunately it's still under warranty but whist the DMF is covered I'm not sure the clutch assembly is. So if the clutch has experienced any damage upon removal because of this...my garage will enlighten the insurers. However its a No brainer to fit a complete new clutch assembly whilst doing the replacement DMS given the car has done 57k miles. Once again thank-you Gareth.

Also... If anyone has any ideas as to why the DM flywheel is failing? (resulting in engine and ride vibration) I would be very grateful for your expert comments. Thank you all.

Thanks Martyn,

Pessimistic view -  so since clutch wear is inevitable, I doubt that will be covered under warranty. Great if the DMF is.
Why failure at a modest mileage? From faulty component, to over enthusiastic driving.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

Hi Gareth.. I bought the vehicle used.. last December. But I forgot to mention the following if it has a bearing on my problem?.. I had my local Garage do an oil change and I was informed that the oil had not been changed recently when my mechanic removed the sump nut.. I was surprised as the dealership I bought it from assured me that an oil service was done along with a new MOT....  I also had my mechanic change the Cam belt and the waterpump... and the rattle appeared the following morning on start up. I went straight away back to him..and it was he who told me of the flywheel vibration and I saw this myself looking at the engine. However..I have not heard it since and the car seems to be driving OK. Or is this an intermittent thing that will only get more pronounced and amplified over time?..Your thoughts would be appreciated.  Martin.

Hello Martyn,

I would certainly be getting a second opinion on this, since as you will appreciate, this is going to be an expensive job.

If it were mine, I would be taking it to a trusted local independent and seeking advice there.
Noises appearing immediately after repair work, might ( in caps) by coincidental, but unusual to be so.
How did you actually see this suspect flywheel issue when you returned the car?
Kind regards,

Gareth.

Hi Gareth..I took it to another independent garage after my own highlighted the problem..and they couldn't find a problem. So I'm going back again to the other garage to see if they can find the problem.. IT is covered under the warranty but obviously if its not apparent now what do you recommend..because once the warranty finishes (April 20th). It will be paying. Thanks.

Ive driven the car quite a few times since and everything appears normal now. (History: Following cam belt and water pump change on the Thursday afternoon I drove home about 3 miles from my normal garage. On the Friday morning at start up the rattle was evident so I returned to my normal garage and the mechanic told me it was the flywheel and I could see the engine vibration for myself. So I took it to another garage on his recommendation for verification and they road tested it. I left it with them overnight for them to cold start it the following morning and they could find nothing again.) As it's under warranty and as you've said a costly job. I want to solve this before the warranty expires. Any other ideas as to why its suddenly gone away?
