2.0 TDI rattle sound

Featured Replies

Hello everyone
Have Audi A4 B9 2019 2.0 TDI 190 ps, DETA
Starting from 1500 rpm an unpleasant rattle sound is heard, which disappears when the gas pedal is released. This sound is clearly audible at the driver's feet. I tried to record this sound:
Maybe somebody have ideas? I changed fuel pump. fuel injectors - no change(

Hey, did you find out what it was? Got the same sound coming from my car.

There's no point posting these types of videos as the background noise makes it difficult to isolate anything untoward. If it's a rattle, then nine times out ten it's a heat shield under the car. The fasteners corrode and the heat shield rattles. Also check brake dust shields, but this would be unusual on a 2019 B9. Lastly check the main exhaust straight pipe where it joins after the catalytic convertor. The exhaust clamps eventually corrode. Mikalor stainless clamps are the best you can fit.

If you can trace and localise the sound, that's different, as you will be able to get a more detailed video.

Well problem is that you can hear this sound only at certain speed or rpms, like in my car you can hear it above 30km/h.

Listening to audio recordings has always been a problem for us. We each become attuned to the noises our own car makes, so when an unusual noise occurs the human brain can mentally filter out the normal noises and hear the abnormal noise. Unfortunately when a stranger hears an audio recording he hears every noise and can not distinguish the abnormal one.

Hello, I am pretty sure I have this exact sound with 2.0 TDI DETA engine.

Audible mostly after 1500rpm on gears 3-5 and goes away INSTANTLY when you let off throttle. I feel like it is varying in loudness from day to day, potentially temperature?

My video is also recorded from drivers footwell and it is clearly coming from drivers side.

All help is appreciated!!

All I hear is road noise plus a squeak at about ten seconds.

Yeah sorry about the squeak that is probably just my finger moving on the phone.

Turn up the volume and from around 3 seconds you will hear a clatter/rattle/tick up until the squeak, like a tractor almost.

When the squeak comes I let off and it goes away.

Right after the squeak at about 12 seconds i accelerate harder and it comes in again.

I completely get what you mean about it being hard to hear on video but turn it up as much as you need and you should hear it.

hey, i have the same problem but the more I drive the more the sound disappears, now many times it is not heard at all, other times it is, more often when it is cold, the mechanic told me that it is the injectors but he said it is not a defect and does not need to be solved (I had the injectors tested and cleaned)

No thanks. Turning up the volume would also raise the background noise to levels that would damage my speakers. As I wrote 10 months ago in this topic, you need to make a recording with less background noise and more defect noise, i.e. a higher signal to noise ratio.

Hard time recording the noise better really.

I have tried to EQ out background noise now but in turn it also affects the noise a little, hopefully at least you are able to hear what we are referring to 🙂

Injectors were my initial thought aswell but OP says he changed injectors?

And yes my sound also seems to be louder in the cold. I can’t say that it has gotten better driving with it though… i have a hard time just ignoring such a noise as if it were completely normal. Scared to make it worse.

Sorry Jonathon, that's no better for me. Your best bet is to take the car to a mechanic who can slide under the car.

Yeah sorry there is really no way for me to make it any clearer. I can hear it clearly on all different devices I have played it on.

But as you stated earlier our ears are attuned to the sound and we know what we are listening for.

Thanks for trying at least 🙂

Have the garage/mechanic investigate the possibility that the dual mass fly wheel is starting to fail.

Hello everyone,

I have the same problem with my car. I hear the noise when accelerate and it stops when the gas pedal is released. It is not always present, meaning that on some days it works perfectly fine. l have checked with a two different mechanics that have a lot of experience fixing automatic transmitions and both said that dual mass flywheel is getting worn out. It is not urgent to be replaced, but it should be done in the next 10-20k kilometers.

Sorry for eventual typing mistake as English is not my native language.

Most cases of bad DMF I have heard it is noisy at idle as well. But thank you so much for the suggestions, I'll have to get it checked.

Also @Mladen don't worry about your english, it is great 🙂

I wanted to come back and make an update in case anyone is in the same situation.

I had my car checked out at a reputable dealer who concluded it was nothing to worry about. They tried to seal some potential noise leaks in to the cabin but ultimately said it is normal diesel sound. No real explanation as to why other cars don’t have the same thing but they assured me it was nothing bad

The sealing/insulation or whatever they did dampened it somewhat, but I still hear it because I am accustomed to it..
