what is this noise?

Featured Replies

Hello! Wondering if anyone can help,

Car is a 72 reg 1.0 Audi A1. Car runs like a dream but not sure what this noise is? It only happens when the car is warmed up, never happens on a cold start. The more I drive the car and the more the start/stop kicks in then the worse the noise gets.

i took it into Audi (as it’s under warranty still), checked the car over and said they can’t find any faults with it,

No errors codes either

I have added three videos showing the noise, it sounds as if it’s coming near the passenger side if that helps!

Thanks in advance 🙂

Get a second opinion. Is there a different Audi dealer that you could use locally? Or maybe a good independent? Skoda Seat and VW use the same engines so you could try one of those although they may charge you. The car is still under manufacturer's warranty but I don't know for long.

Any update?

Hello again, my second closest Audi garage is over 20 miles away and they earliest they could fit my in was end of October 😢. So I took it to my local mechanic and he had a good look at the car (I trust him with my car and is a very reliable mechanic with all ny other cars I’ve had). And typically the noise never happened all the time he was assessing the car. He however thinks it’s the starter motor possibly starting to fail. He listened to the videos I had recorded and THINKS it’s that. Since that day (two weeks ago) the car hasn’t made the noise since, so strange: whether the weather has become damp or wet and not as hot the starter motor isn’t as warm? I’m not entirely what if that even makes sense what I’ve just said but my mechanic said possibly wait until the noise gets more persistent or worse. The car runs like a dream so I’m a bit stuck this issue even though the noise hasn’t came back to haunt me..: yet!

Intermittent faults are the worst. Hopefully it won't come back.
