2022 Audi A1 clutch failure

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have an Audi A1 that is 3 years and 4 months old. On Monday I pulled up to a round about to let some traffic pass. When I tried to pull away, it was very difficult to get the car into gear. Once I got going again the car was over revving and eventually would not go into gear.
Luckily enough there was a small independent garage just down the road. I managed to coast my car down the hill and into the garage(how lucky am I).

The guys in the garage were amazing. Got my car I and had it inspected within the hour. Total clutch failure. £1100 repair. I have had no problems at all with my car before I pulled up to that round about. No clutch slip/over revving, trouble with gear changing, nothing.

Of course, with my car being out of warranty by 3 months, Audi are refusing to repair it

I just wanted to know

1. Is this a common occurrence with A1’s?

2. Are Audi correct in being so matter of fact that a clutch can go on a car of that age with 36456 miles on the clock?

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Michelle

Welcome Michelle and really sorry to hear of your issue.
What particular component of the clutch assembly actually failed within the ‘total clutch failure’?

Slave cylinder?

Gareth.

Mmmmm no idea, just been told the clutch and possibly the flywheel, I haven’t given them authority to take it out yet as I am in discussions with Audi UK.
When it happened it had a really bad burning smell if that helps?

Thanks for replying 😊

Thanks Michelle,

Apologies, but I read it as the job had already been done.

If your local garage does do it, it would be useful to know which component has actually failed - perhaps you can let us know in due course.
Re. your discussions with Audi:- it may work out that they may eventually suggest a discount on their costs of repair. If so, you will need to work out whether it’s cheaper to go with your local garage or with Audi ( at their much higher labour rates).

The burning smell may have been due to the slave cylinder failure resulting on clutch fluid getting onto the clutch plate.
If it ends up with your local garage doing it, insist on only LUK. parts. You might find the flywheel is a main dealer part only, so that could affect their current quote, so wise to consider carefully if it boils down to a local garage vs main dealer ( with discount) quote.
Good luck in getting justice, and please let us know how you get on.

Regards, Gareth.
