No heat in cabin, not over heating, but gets up to temp fast

Featured Replies

Hi all, not been on ere for a long time. Just wondering if anybody can help with the 'No heat in Cabin' issue. I've been told that it could be the heater matrix, but i've googled about my problem, and it's throwing other types of issues up aswell. I belive it to be a costly job to replace the heater matrox, with some garahes saying the dash has to come out to locate the matrix? I've seen a video on You Tube where somebody has done it themselfs? Does anybody ere have a rough guide to pricing for a heater matrix replacement, and whete i could get it done asap... i'm in the Manchester (near Rochdale) area, tjanks in advance

Excuse the typos, fat thumb syndrome 🥴

Yours will be a C7 if 2014. As far as I cam see part is 4H0898037, so the heater matrix looks around £300 from Audi. https://www.lllparts.co.uk/catalogs/audi/RDW/A6/798/8/820/820020

I've not done this job thankfully, so just going on what I can see. Before you do anything, just run a scan with VCDS. If you're stripping out part of the trim - you'll have access to heater motors which often fail. This will show up on a scan.

Are you sure the dash needs to come out? Quick scan on YouTube on a C7, looks like you need to remove the passenger glovebox, possible part of the central trim. I'd also remove the passenger seat for access. Pull the battery and put on trickle charge as there's airbag connectors there.

Cheers Bud, apparently, this is a problem.that happenes maybe every 4 or 5 years, which makes it areally common fault, and unfortunaltely, i don't have VCDS to sau what it is? The vid you posted, i watched that a couple of days ago, which tells me that these garages are out to rape your pocket. What i don't understand, is why i've been told you have to take the dash out? when clearly, you don't?? I've found an 'Independent' dealer close to where i live, and he's 100% certain it's the Matrix, he's said to go up and he'll do a diagnostics to make sure. I've heard it's about £700 to have it fixed, if you take the dash out? ... i'll update on what's what later tday when i get back.

Cheers again for your reply m8y

At some point consider getting VCDS. Cheapest package is 3 VIN licence for £222, pus an old laptop to run it on. That gives you lifetime updates and genuine HEX-V2 USB dongle. If you're running a Bi-turbo 3.0 TDI, there's a lot you can do yourself, to disabling rear electric handbrake to swap out discs and pads to priming fuel pump, plus a host of other things. Bear in mind - Audi will charge you £150 just to scan the car. https://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VCV23NC.html

No worries m8y, i'll keep that in mind... although i'm not too savi with computer stuff lol...

Dave. If all the air vents blow cold I'd agree it's likely the matrix; however if some vents blow cold while others blow hot it's more probable that some of the flap motors in the air ducts are faulty.

See this regarding a possible cause of a blocked heater matrix:

Cheers for your reply Cliff, that's a great idea what you've found there, i'm definately going to look into getting a sillica bag free expansion chamber now 👍🏻😁

I took my car up to an independent Audi garage, and sods law came into play, the heater worked fine? but, yday it didn't? Strange when i go on the motorway too, it was blowing cold air? but tday, it was totally as if nothing had happened? ... the guy tested it, and asked me if i'd had any coolent loss? I told him i'd topped it up about 2 days ago, only a cup full, if that, but it was below the minimum level. He told me that it would cut the heat frim inside the car of it was that low? ... but still, that was 2 days ago., and now the hrater has decided to work again? ... all vents are blowing hot air. I'm going to York Saturday so, i'll see how it goes? I've been told to check for coolent loss when i get back.

I'm going to look for a new ecpansion tank over the next few days too... cheers again bud for the heads up...

Well, weird as it may seem, all's still good? .... i've checket the expansion tank, and i don't think it has a sillica bag in it? ... maybe when i bought it, somebody already swapped it out? .. another question i have is, at what temp does warm air come through the vents? I've got the dials set at 20, which i have as a norm, and i used to get warm air? .. but they blow cold air at 20 now, so i have to turn the dials up? Just seems odd?

Not all models had the silica bag, but doesn't mean the matrix is not blocked by something else such as sediment or an air lock. Nor have we eliminated the flap motors in the air ducts, which as Richard mentioned, are best test tested with a decent code reader.

It's a 2014, 3ltr Diesel? I tried shining a light through it as suggested on some info i found on google, also, there's no type inbetween the 'Max n Min' lvls? ... i think i'm gunna get it checked again to see if any of the things you've said is occuring Cliff. I'll have to wait till next Friday now though, as i work away. I'll keep you posted m8y, and thanks for all the info you've given me, i'm a bit of a noob when it comes down to modern cars lol. Too many things can go wrong with them 🥴🥴

I had a 15 plate daily driver Polo and it had the silica bag as it had G13 coolant. More details here. Dave Sterl is old school, but very knowledgeable.

The fact you’re getting intermittent heat I’m thinking this is a motor flap issue. Get the car scanned with VCDS. If the flaps are stuck, or the motors have failed, it will show up straight away.

Ok, so, i've just found out, my heater does get warm, but only if i turn the dial up full, and it gets really warm, but anything under full, it stays cold? ... i'll not be able to get it scanned till next Friday now as i work away. Gunna have a look at the video you posted m8y, see what the this guy has to say. Also, i've found that the Aircon only blows cold too, with the heater up full? ... i just hope it's not the matrix and it's a relitively easy fix as such... i'll definatey keep you's posted on the outcome... i've covered a good few miles tday, and the car itself hasn't played up, or any sign of overheating so, maybe it's something like you suggested Spartacus68 😊👍🏻

I forgot to say, i had a look at the expansion tank before too, it has G12 for coolant, and there's no sign of the lable saying Silikat? So maybe it's already been swapped out? I'll get it scanned and see what's what. I think it's looking more like it could be 1 of the things you've suggested 🤔🤔😊 like a motor, or a stuck flap??
