Stinks of petrol

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, new to this so everything might turn out upside down , have a 2017 Q3 1.4 tfsi, the fault on it is stinks of petrol, low on power, hard to start, used quarter of a tank to do 5 miles, there are no fuel leaks and on my hand held diagnostic tool fault p008700 fuel rail system pressure to low.

Has anyone experienced symptoms like this? Grateful of any help.

Fuel rail pressure too low and smell suggests a possible Injector failure. Do you have other symptoms such as misfire or very sooty exhaust that would point towards injector problems?

Hi, no misfire, down on power, no soot in exhaust or black smoke when driving it,bad smell of fuel but no leak present, good flow of fuel from low pressure pump, used 1/4 of a tank of fuel to do 5 miles.

Where is this fuel going and what’s causing the smell

Check your oil level and consistency of oil. Another possibility is fuel leaking from the intake manifold/injectors into the sump so no visible leak but still the smell and a quarter tank would show in the oil level! If this is the case change the oil ASAP.

Hello mate

You was in the right ballpark, today the Mrs informed me you need to sort my car out I need it for work, so I didn’t have the luxury of time to make it my next project. Have been paying the AA for 20 years so now it was time to use them. They came today and he went straight for the n/s under the manifold with his torch and spotted a slight wet patch. Unscrewed the manifold and there it was a bolt holding the rail in place had worked loose unseating No 4 injector a mm or 2, he said it was a common fault on the 1.4 engine. So he tightened it up and it ran better but still has slight leak so have to get the injectors re sealed and new bolts for the rail.

Thanks for your help and advice, you was on the money.

Glad the chat was helpful and you got it fixed.
