help! loud clunking noise from nearside front above 50mph

I need some advice - my A3 sportback has developed a loud knocking above 50mph from the nearside front.  the car has been a bit rattly from the top end and is a bit leggy having covered nearly 180k but this sounds serious... any ideas?
