Audi A5 chain failure!

Went to start the a5 (1.8 tfsi) and it wouldn't turn over with a rattling noise coming from the engine. Had the code read by a mechanic friend of mine and its pointing to chain failure! Does anyone have experice of chain failure and what sort of costs a like to come with it? I'm hoping there's minimal engine damage as the car was stationary but you can never tell! Not the best start to a Monday!
