Oil Pump?

Hi, I would appreciate some advice if anyone can help. I have an Audi A6 which has done 100k. Last night as I was driving, the oil pressure light came on. I stopped the car and turned it back on and the light聽didn't come immediately on but did after about half a mile. I immediately stopped and as I did the brakes went hard. I called the AA who delivered the car to my local garage.

the guy from the AA said it could be the oil pump,聽however he wasn't too sure as the brakes went solid. The local garage have called back (they would've only been open so have have seen the car for two hours at this stage). They said it is more than likely the oil pump which would've caused engine problems and I therefore need a second hand engine. They also said they are unable to see the oil pump without taking the whole engine out?聽

I have called the garage where I purchased the car, an Audi specialist. He said he can't say for sure without reviewing the car but it seems strange for the first garage to immediately say a new engine is needed. He said he will look at the car next week and if it is the fuel pump then it's at least 拢900+ for the part and then labour. He said it could've caused issues with the turbo etc but without looking he can't say. He did say it's strange there was no other lights, noises or engine failure.

there isn't much i can do now until next week but does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks聽

Hello Vicky,

Sorry to hear of your problems. If it were mine, I would get this car transported ( and I must emphasis transported - AA should onwardly聽transport you ) to a trusted Audi independent and get their opinion. This could be as simple as聽a faulty oil pressure sender, but you are wise to be concerned that it isn't driven until it is correctly diagnosed.

Re. The hard brakes - sounds as if this is a lack of servo assistance and make be associated with some inbuilt engine limiting聽mode connected with a low oil pressure indication.聽

Good luck with getting it sorted.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

Hi Vicky

I would totally agree with everything that Magnet has stated and in particular, ensure the diagnosis is carried out correctly rather than condemning parts or even the complete engine. Brakes, I would also agree that it is where the engine has shut-off and the servo assistance is lost.

Keep us informed on the progress.

regards 聽 Trevor
