BKD 2.0TDI starter motor

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I'm trying to source a starter motor for my A3 Sportback BKD 2.0tdi 140bhp 2006.

Having taken my current one off to count its teeth and check its model, I can confirm it has an 11 tooth count and is Valeo branded. Please see attached photos for evidence of current starter.

Eurocarparts suggest that there are 4 different brands and two different fitment types for this vehicle. Unfortunately, none of these match what I currently have.

The following starters are available on eurocarparts:

Fitment 1

  1. RTX: 10 teeth ,1,7 KW
  2. Hella: 10 teeth ,1,7 KW
  3. Bosch: 10 teeth ,1,7 KW

Fitment 2

  1. RTX: 12 teeth, 2 KW
  2. Lucas: 12 teeth, 2 KW

All models offered have the same flange & lengths in mm.

Could anyone shed any light on which to buy? I'm limited to buying a factory refurbished one rather than from a breakers.

Cheers.

Hi Ballard,

You need to check carefully before ordering one as there are multiple different versions depending on whether it's auto/manual and also if your car has stop/start function on it!

It would be worth ringing a main dealer if your unsure of the fitment to at least get the part no for one which an auto-factor could then at least reference.

It does seem strange, I had a look around myself and couldn't find an 11 tooth starter motor either most look to be the 10 tooth version!

Actually, I just found this:

I think it'll be the first on the list at the top (but check first), prices look quite reasonable too.

Hi Rob,

I don't quite understand it though, how is it possible to use a "10,11" tooth starter in place of an 11 tooth motor? Wouldn't that potentially damage my flywheel's teeth?

Cheers :)

Hi Mate,

Thats why I said to check first, it's the only place I found that actually even mentions the 11th tooth version.

I think your best bet before ordering that one or any other would be to speak to an audi parts department/mechanic or other reputable independant for clarification on the tooth variations.
