A3 Cabriolet roof operation issue

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, can you assist with a question please.

I was at the golf club, stuff in the boot and stuff in the back seats.  Hot day with the roof down, I took the stuff from the boot and then from the seats, and then i pulled the lever to close the roof.

The roof went through its command to close and the boot was up.  the rear closing panel and the boot lid came together and caused an awful lot of damage, which I am currently sorting out.

I asked the local Audi technicians if there should be a fail safe, they said yes it shouldnt go through its commend and should cut out.   Audi customer care are struggling with an answer but seem to be saying it should carry through its command and the damage can occur, its not a fault with the model (im awaiting there answer in e mail but its taking a long time fro them to commit to an answer).

Do any owners have the definitive knowledge of how the car should perform in these circumstances please?

Thanks, Brian

I can't say for sure, (and I'm not going to try it with my current A3 if there's a risk of damage!) but I've had two previous convertibles with powered tops (an SLK and a Peugeot 307CC), and neither of them would let you operate the top if the boot wasn't properly closed.

Strikes me as a pretty fundamental thing to check, and I'd be amazed if Audi say that the A3 is designed to function differently from other makes of convertible.

Perhaps your car was repaired incorrectly at some point in the past, and a sensor was bypassed?

Well, I tried it, despite my misgivings.

The roof didn't close, and a message "Please close trunk lid" came up on the display.

Hope that helps!

My car is an Audi 3 8v convertible S line  if you leave the boot open the roof will not close it comes up please close trunk lid I hope this hope  I hope this  helps you there must be a fault on the car or the  sensor has failed but the roof should never of worked the way has done .Or somebody has repaired the roof at some stage in its life I have an Astra twin top as well and I’ve tried it with that with the boot open roof will not go through its commands hope this helps you

2020 just had the same problem what was your cause and resolution

Hello Stewart,

Unfortunately the original poster posted this two and a half years ago, and didn’t even return to the forum from the day he joined!  You could try sending him a PM, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Might be better to start a new thread, and fully explain your current issue.

Kind regards,

Gareth.
