just had garage  inspect my audi a4 2011 2.0 tdi said the auxiliary belt snapped and wrapped itself in the timing belt before further inspection recommended we  change the timing belt so  they could investigate whether or not  it had put the engine out of time unfortunately it was

said ill need new cylinder head valves etc etc amounting to over 2k 

could anyone tell me if this information ive been given is correct and that it is possible for the auxiliary belt to get caught in the timing belt

That is rotten luck, not unheard of either.

as far as I am aware your car does have a timing belt rather than timing chain. The serpentine belt is on the same side of the engine as the timing belt.

i would be ringing around a few levels cal garages to see what price they can do the job for but if you are getting all new items then you will struggle to get it done much cheaper.

a new head complete with valves etc should be around 6-800£ depending on the engine code you have. But you could source a secondhand head, cleaned and prepped for less than £300, down to about £150. A garage would take best part of a day to do the work, there is a lot of prep just to get to the head in the engine bay.

is there a VAG specialist close to you?

 

Just spent a bit of time on the T5 forum searching for this and there are loads of incidences of the 20tdi engine aux belt shredding and taking out the engine by fouling the timing belt.

it seems the common cause is believed to be the tensioner failing.
