Hi, can any one help? I have just bought a 1997 R Reg Audi cabriolet and it has a few faults that i wish to fix to restore it back to its original beauty/condition.

1. Centre console gauges- access to them to replace bulbs- How??????

2. Where is the temp gauge sender unit as the gauge is very intermittant (i think its just a bad connection).

Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Al.

Easy one first

The temp gauge sender is near front of engine, on nearside, at about knee height, just above the alloy oil sump but hidden beneath various pipes - put your head on the n/side head light unit and look down across engine bay. The sender is brass coloured and has single wire going to it. The sender is not big but cost @£15:00 + vat for any good motor factors. If the fault is intermitant it could be the wire has chaffed somewhere and is occasionally earthing. It may be best to replace the wire whilst the gaiges are out ( see below)

To get to the gauges is a bit more of a pain.

1) remove ashtray at back of centre consul this will reveal a 10mm nut - remove this

2)there is a blanking plate just under handbrake button on the centre consul remoce this to reveal a 10mm bolt - remove this

3) adjacent to the 10mm bolt is a self tap screw - only visible if you put your head on the handbrake - remove this .

4) Unscrew gear stick knob

5) Lift off gaitor around g'stick

6) Centre consul will split by the 10mm bolt with a little jiggling - push rear part back as far as poss - with handbrake in halfway position seems best - but you may find a better position

7) Front part of consul can now be moved backward, and under the lip above the 3 gauges - it's very fiddly doing this but persist and go carefully

8) when front consul is out and rear of gauges visible the black lump aat the top is the bulb holder, turn 1 quarter clockwise (looking at gauge front) to remove bulb holder. Pull bulb out

9) problem now is to get a new bulb - but at least you have the duff one to show.

Reverse instructions to re assemble not that forward part of consul fits onto slides just above gauges at the corners.

me here again

forgot to mention that the oil pressure switch ( for the dashboard light) is also in the same vicinity, so don't get them confused. The oil pressure switch is grey& black and has a 22mm nut for removal, the temp switch is 12.5mm nut, and brass in colour. You can test the temp sender easily as it resistance chages with temperature, so using a multimeter and a mug of tea ( or hot water), you can see where the fault is.

It also helps visibility to remove the plastic covers over the engine and fanbelt - they are both easy to shift, and also allow the fanbelt to be checked.
