Charging Speed Dropped

Featured Replies

Hi everyone.
Since having the 2020 Audi E-Tron 50 for 6 months, the charging has been constant at 7kw from my home charger. In the past week the charging rate has dropped to 4.8kw and never goes any higher. I’ve tried a public 7kw charging point and does the same 4.8kw charging speed. It is due a service and going in a 2 weeks time, but not sure if the indicator warning message would automatically slow the charging speed.
Has anyone had the same issue and if so how was it resolved?

What was the state of charge when you began recent charging sessions? Are you aware that the charge rate will drop considerably as the SOC approaches 80%? It is usually said that it takes as long to charge from 10% to 80% as it does to charge from 80% to 100%.

I’ve had the battery percentage down to 20% and still not getting any higher than 4.8kw charging speed. Before it would do 7kw right up to a 80% and even between 80-100%.

Cliff is quite correct in saying it takes as long to charge from 80% to 100% as it does to charge to 80%. Audi suggests that you don't charge beyond 80% though. Sounds to me it is a problem with the car also.

The E-Tron is going into Audi Tuesday next week. Will post the outcome next of the visit to Audi.

Hi - I have same issue. Since midnight on June 28th this year the charging rate dropped to around 3.2 - 3.8 Kw instead of the solid 7.5 it was previously.  I’ve tried different cables, different chargers and it stays the same. I am just asking a friend with the exact same car to come and hook up to my home charger to finally rule that out. Audi ran diagnostics but found no faults - and - it charged at 7.5kw on the charger at the dealer. Grr. I have a suspicion there is some nefarious software limiting going on if the charger is not an Audi one - mine’s a Zappi.

The car is back at Audi on Monday for more poking and prodding. As yet they’ve not yet asked for payment although I was given notice that diagnostics were charged at £150.

Will post again when there’s news!

My friend plugged his ‘71 plate Q4 (same as mine) into my charger and boom! 7.5 kw…so the only logical thing it can be is the car.

It seems so. You implied that the charge rate dropped suddenly at midnight on a certain date, which makes me wonder if a schedule in the car had expired, or your electricity supplier had changed something if it controls the times of charging.

…and yet my friend’s Q4, on my charger, works as expected - it has to be the car.

My local Audi garage is now ‘waiting for an update from Technical’…

…and they have found a fault of sorts, though I’m not sure whether it implies hardware or software. Audi were still waiting for ‘Technical’ so I brought the car home. They will contact me to bring it back when they have something to do/try.

Gulp… Audi say ‘it’s the charging unit on the car’. The replacement unit cost is £3,980.  The kind lady dealing with this is going to talk to her management about that. I don’t know if anything will come from that conversation but that cost is frankly astronomical and if it doesn’t come down by a large amount I will probably just live with issue. Sheesh!

Spolling!

Having thought for a moment I am more than a bit suspicious. the Audi dealership says my car charges at full speed (7.5 - 8 kw) on the Audi charger in their workshop - so why won’t it on mine, Tesco’s, John Lewis’s…? Hmm…

That price suggests the whole inverter is going to be changed, but like you I am not convinced it is at fault.

I mentioned your electricity supplier earlier and asked if it was controlling the times and rates of charging, which is something that the Zappi charge point is often used for. Have you checked that?

The chap who installed the Zappi came round for an annual service check up - he spent 2 hours talking to Zappi and British Gas (who are my electricity suppliers) - there is nothing limited there. It's the car. I see you can find replacement on-board charge units on the likes of eBay for 1/10th of the price of a new one. Might go that way if Audi insist there is nothing (much) they can do about their price, and find someone to swap it out for me.

So…my faith in humanity in general and Audi in particular is restored. My local dealer just called to book in my Q4 to replace the on-board charger without cost to me. I am both delighted and relieved !
