Weird noise!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I wonder if any of you have had a similar experience, my A3, 09 Reg has 74 tho miles on the clock and has developed a whirring noise that seems to be coming from the front engine compartment. As I go faster the whir gets louder and seems faster, like something is spinning! Will this be the timing belt?

My acceleration isn't affected but the noise is REALLY off putting, ha.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks in advance

Bev

Hi Bev,

From your description, its sounds like one of the front wheel bearings is the issue.  This should be the first thing you get checked.

  • 6 months later...

If it as a turbo fitted it could be the turbo failing needs to looked at

  • 3 weeks later...

could be the auxiliary drivebelt and/or tensioner....hopefully a cheap fix!

  • 4 years later...

Does it make the noise when not in gear?  This will tell you if its wheel bearings or something with the engine.  Last week I had the water pump go on my A3 it made a similar sound before and a real racket after.
