Wandering steering and knocking suspension

Featured Replies

With my wheel straight my wheels veer to the right but when i let go of the wheel it pulls hard to the left. I also have a very loose disconnected feel to the road and aggressive knocking.

The file attached is me rocking the steering wheel left and right. I’ve had the tie rod ends replaced

Sorry Reece, I will not download files from untrusted sources, however your description suggests you need to get all the other steering and suspension joints checked, as well as the top mounts of the struts and the wheel bearings. Once they are in good order the steering alignment will need to be adjusted.

If it's over 100k miles which is likely, then probably needs front end refresh for multi-link suspension. You can replace bits and pieces, but you need to mirror that both sides. Lemforder is OE, but I'd fit that or Meyle HD. Will need tracking and alignment afterwards.

Welcome Reece,
I would add:-

Don’t ignore checking and adjusting tyre pressures.
Don’t ignore the affect of wear in rear suspension, resulting in a feeling of the ‘ tail wagging the dog’.
Regards,

Gareth.

Thanks for the quick replies, looks like my best course of action is to work a few weekends then hit the front end in bulk. feels almost dangerous sometimes

There is no almost about it, it is dangerous and undoubtedly an MOT failure.

That sort of wear does not happen suddenly, it developes over many months. Is the car a recent aquisition?

Had 2 arms and a tie rod changed

2 weeks later i started hearing a knock and it’s developed over a fortnight into a horrible experience

i had the tie rod end changed as i was told that was the culprit of the knocking yet the issue still persists

Do front end refresh as suggested. Also check bushes on ARB, not the links, the actual bushes. For all arms - torque to final setting with wheels on the ground or you'll stress bushes. If knocking persists - could be inner tie-rod. Again check for play. Look at top-mounts too, plus coil springs. Not uncommon to have a break in the spring near the end.

‘..hit the front end in bulk…’ Exactly what are you going to do/replace Reece?

Surely the logical way forward would be to first get the car re inspected by the garage who changed the 2 arms and tie rod. If you don’t get a firm diagnosis of where the fault lies, then you are just going to be throwing parts at it in the hope of a resolution.
Not a good policy.

Regards,

Gareth.

I apologise forgot to hit send

The tech that worked on my car i returned to and he said with confidence that the knocking was ironically the same part he replaced, i’ve got it booked in for a deeper inspection before i pull the trigger on anything
