Historic vehicle - need year of manufacture

Featured Replies

Hello

A new member and new Audi 100LS Owner.

The car is 1973, and I have only recently purchased it. However it came to the UK from Rep of Ireland, without any paperwork!

I have Nova’d the car but I’ve not managed to register it yet with DVLA, as they need written verification what year the car was manufactured. This is despite me finding out, and providing proof that the car was originally a UK car exported to Ireland. I provided them the previous registration which they will not accept, even though it’s on their database.

i have also contacted Audi UK, COC registration, Tupe approval VWG UK and someone else.

i have also attempted to get a heritage certificate from Audi Germany, but it says they don’t provide this service to the UK!!!

I feel I have exhausted every avenue. The car is in lovely unrestored condition, and really needs to be on the road.

Can anyone advise how I may proceed?

THANKS

Welcome James,

If all the ducks aren’t in a row for DVLA, then they will run you ragged - as you are now finding out!
Not wishing to make things worse, but expect to find another hurdle close down the line once you eventually sorted this out!

I dealt with them in a capacity of ‘DVLA Adviser’ for a Classic car club for a couple of decades prior to Covid, and I understand it’s a lot worse now.

My advice was to never to buy a car without paperwork - too late for you!
Can I take it the car has an original legible VIN plate securely attached with original fixings? If so, you should eventually get a reg. no. If it doesn’t then you can kiss goodbye to any chance of a reasonable rough paths to success.

Build record/ year of manufacture? Simple route first - go along ( don’t phone) to your local Audi dealer armed with VIN  and talk with the Parts Dept. Long shot chance, but eliminate it.
Join a German Audi ‘classic car’ club, and get them on board to deal with Audi Germany for you. They are more likely to get some degree of success than you are.
Approach FBHVC and seek their advice. They can act with advice and liaison with DVLA - probably at a price.

Some possible avenues to go down, so please let us know how you get on.
One thing to bear in mind is, when DVLA closed their LVL offices, such matters were handed over to the Kit and Rebuild Section at DVLA, so you can guess the logic of treating any unknown as being a ‘ bitser’.
Regards,

Gareth.

Hi Gareth

Thanks very much for your reply. I will contact who you have suggested and hopefully one of them works out.

i am pretty tenacious, and looks like i will have to be.

I did speak to DVLA. They could see the car on their system but wont accept that. It’s absolutely crazy stuff.

i will keep this updated.

Thanks

Hi Gareth

I managed to get the email address of a man who works with Audi Tradition/Auto Union.

He has literally just sent me a letter from Audi Germany confirming date of manufacture 😊😊

Thanks again

VIN is stamped into the inner wing area.

Thanks James, that’s great to hear.

Could you do us a kindness and keep us updated on progress. This updating will hopefully be helpful to others in your situation in the future.

Regards,

Gareth.

Will do Gareth. Happy to help anyone that needs guidance. In the past I have imported many cars from the USA as well, so I have experience that I’m willing to share.

I will put up a few pictures later of the car

Hi Gareth

Thanks for asking. They are a nightmare.

sent them proof of age from Audi De, also the NOVA certification. They came back and asked for the foreign registration document, which I previously advised I didn’t have. They then asked for an explanation as to to why there was no foreign registration document. This s was despite me previously advising why there was no documents.
I have now responded yet again with the reasons behind this. I’m hoping this is me in the final stretch, but I’m not counting my chickens!

The car is on their system as it left the UK for Ireland in 2017!

I will update as soon as I hear, hopefully with positive news

Glad you got sorted. What other hoops did you have to jump through in the end?

Great. Well done you James, and no doubt ably assisted by Percy Verarance.
Could we take the liberty of referring others to you if they need some advice on this!
Regards,

Gareth.

Thanks

it was information mainly, apart from the dating info which I got from Audi Germany. However, all the information they kept requesting was all contained in previous correspondence I had sent them! I think it was five applications that I made in total. Received my documents back yesterday which I had sent them, along with a postal order for first registration. Their document yesterday stated that the first registration was free and I was getting my postal order returned, however it want in the envelope!!

Not that bothered, just glad it’s eventually registered

Thanks Gareth. Yes, it was difficult, just dealing with jobsworths I think.

Happy to assist anyone if I can.

Hi, I’ve just purchased an Audi Coupe GT(B2). I need to change to historic tax class, would you be able to help me please? Thank you

Hi

That is quite easy to do.

The best way is to go to your local post office with your V5. Tell them that you are changing to historic and they will deal with it. They send your V5 away for you and within a couple of weeks you’ll get a new V5. Once it’s returned remember and go online and tax it. Although it is free, you still need to go through the process.

Thanks Jim, I’m hoping to buy the car on Saturday, I was just reading your initial post, & it seemed a lot of grief!
